The enemies in Gothic 1 literally stand in one place, can be easily lured out from the rest of thr group which makes it too easy, the backstep doesn't fucking work properly, human NPCs are piss easy and they all have the same animation

mages tried to create a barrier around the mine that wouldn't let the prisoners escape from it but the barrier grew in size and covered the entire valley trapped everybody inside and they're cut off from the rest of the world and the outside world decided that this will be a prison now. You're a prisoner and get thrown inside the barrier, there's three different factions. The faction on the swamp worships a god named the Sleeper and they believe that he will help them get out of the prison. So they awaken him but it turns out he's not a good god but actually an evil demon sleeping deep beneath the earth and his magic aura was the reason the barrier grew in size so much. So you kill him, and you destroy the barrier, and all the prisoners escape into the mainland

Its a very gritty, dark game, it sets the mood very nicely, its smaller that Gothic 2 so its a little less explorable and more linear, but i for one found this game more fun, gothic 2 is better in every aspect, but gothic 1 sometimes doesnt take itself too seriously so it was ultimately more fun imo. Playing the first one will make gothic 2 a hell lot more enjoyable
