It's almost as if you have to listen to the audience of a niche franchise when making a game for them. All they had to do was have DoW 2 mechanics with a little bit of DoW1 sprinkled in and upgraded HD graphics and it would have sold like crazy. Instead they made a MOBA Frankenstein and fucking botched the artstyle tremendously, it looks not even close to what 40k looks like

Feel of 40k was gone. Units are just glorified skins and damage numbers rather than feel like they are.

In Dow2 Space Marine guns sounded strong and they were above average durability and didn't explode at the slightest gunshot.

Orks felt chargey and the WAAAAGGHHH almost always felt brilliant as you bulldozed down your enemies.

Cover mechanics made entrenched defenses or trying to beat them enjoyable. Control points too were excellent for victory objectives.

Dow1 had Sync kills, toppest tier voice acting, overall nice mechanics and a fantastic single player content.

Dow3 is watered down but I think the real reason was the development cycle why it failed.

They went through 3 versions of this. That implies the lead director of the team had no singular, clear vision what they wanted so time was wasted on building from the ground up.

I don't think its the developers fault in the context as a company. I think its more to do with a lot of their good talent along the years being hijacked by other companies.

The people who made Dow1 and Dow2 are long gone as well as the ones who made COH. When you are taking young people from Canada/USA who are attracted to the gaming industry, you are getting unimaginative, uninspired people who do not have much connection to reality. They are shallow.

That influences their ideas with which they have few. So normally they try to reference the latest hot trends without real rhyme or reason beyond "THIS MADE LOTS OF MONEY!". Going by the developer image of the Dow3 team, it was pretty much made by people like that.

On top of the terrible management of the games vision. Just like how GW was going through a drought for so many years but recently has been making an insane financial comeback larger than 2014, Relic has nose dived since THQ went down hill.

Objectively false. Someone went through the effort and checked the developers of the game not that long after release.
All but one were Relic veterans who came in on CoH, DoW2 or Space Marine. Generally, the higher the position, the longer they've been there.
Main designer was the guy who was behind Dark Crusade.

Felt nothing like DoW1 to me. From the shitty music, to ugly visuals, to lacking VA and then escalation phases. Also base building is pointless given that the power core is the target, not your base. Combine that with the fact that your elites are essentially gods and can take on multiple squads by themselves, and you have a horrible game nothing like DoW1

Well Jesus I stand corrected. If that is the case then I guess Relic has just lost its mojo over the years. Pretty sad to hear that but the Dow3 development team certainly seemed more diverse than what I saw in the Dow2 interviews.

Not him but Generic certainly beats trash which Dow3 across the board seems to have been.

DC and SS were trying to emulate TW but to give DC credit I loved that campaign and all the unique commander dialogue and after action reports on top of the endings.

It was simple in execution but it was far from being the tutorial tier of Dow3.

This game would have benefited greatly from having its development timeframe shifted some 2-3 years into the future. Had Relic witnessed the massive success of Total Warhammer, they might have understood that people want tactical depth in combat and unit variety, not autistic basebuilding, which might have resulted in Relic making DoW3 much more similar to DoW2 - a true real time tactics game, which might have echoed the success of Total Warhammer in this day and age when pure RTS titles are dead in the water.

We might have had a good WH40K game this way, but it was not meant to be.
