Normal difficulty is a fucking joke nowadays, you have to play a harder mode to get anything resembling engagement.

I play the coolest games in the best way possible (i.e. maximum player numbers, maximum difficulty settings, without continuing in arcade games, and so on).

Deal with it.

It's better to play on one difficulty harder than normal. Normal is too easy most of the time.

By having a career and a good looking girlfriend. I only play harder difficulty on my second play through if the game was good.

i guarantee most of it is just shitposting but there are genuinely peepole here who think everyone is obligated to be a turbo ultra autist who plays games for "the challenge" rather than the story or just to chill out and relax

Depends on whether you want to experience in a game. Challenge is one possibility, but some people might be more interested in experiencing a game's visuals or writing without worrying about dying and restarting for example.

This.

Starting on the hardest difficulty is almost guaranteed to miss shit in the game unless you use a guide which defeats the purpose of even playing on hard, unless you just wanted the completion I guess.

Infalting numbers do work to some extent. Matching elements for better damage will not work if you can just shoot whatever and still kill everyone. Some mechanics require challenge to make you use them.
>>
>>381548089
This was cringy as hell when I was a kid, but as an adult I enjoy the challenge and excitement of playing on the harder difficulties. It makes things more suspenseful.

I feel like that's how difficulty should work, not just making enemy's bullet sponges.

Hat tipping fag here, Use to play hardest difficulty almost every game.. desu the hardest difficulty's have to cheat to complete, which i rationalize is game breaking and unfair, as im stuck playing vill, while autistic bots playing another.

>>381548089
The best way is to play second highest difficulty on your first playthrough. Highest difficulty is usually where artificial difficulty starts showing itself, and anything below the second highest difficulty is usually piss easy.

>This is one of those things that is impossible to get right for everyone.
Have any games in recent memory copied the Perfect Dark difficulty model? For those that don't recall, the difficulty setting in that game made the levels deeper/larger and added more enemies, and there were a few endgame levels that could only be reached on the highest difficulty. It was basically designed to be played through starting on the easier setting and then working up to the higher difficulties over multiple playthroughs unlocking more and more of the content.

I always thought that was a cool idea. Like the easy mode wasn't easy because their was more ammo or because the enemies had less HP, it was easier because the levels were literally shorter and more straightforward to solve.
>>
i'm not gud and i don't want to git gud
>>
name FIVE (5) games that actually change with the difficulty instead of doing shit like
>lol enemy hp is now 100000 and you only have 1 hp and deal 1 damage
>>
>>381549003
This desu, I play almost exclusively fps and every game I start (with some exceptions), I start from hard difficulty or higher, because it's really fucking satisfying to survive a difficult shootout and it gives you a real sense of "oh shit, better get my shit togheter", that said, if you criticize anyone for the difficulty they play in, you're a massive fucking faggot.
>>
>>381553245
Perfect Dark's higher difficulties did result in you dying faster (whether its because you have less health, or the enemies being stronger im not sure) as well, but limited HP meant the extra objectives were harder because you had to last longer. Smaller mistakes could add up and cost you. I love the system it's my favourite game and I wish more games had it, but it would only work in a system where cumulative mistakes can kill you, not a system like cawadooty where you can just get your health all back by the next objective.

Who /2ndhardestdifficulty/ here?

No point playing combat focused RPGs on anything lower than hardest difficulty available.
When your build works on tuned down enemies it's not as satisfying.
>>
>>381553574
>not a system like cawadooty where you can just get your health all back by the next objective
COD might be a bad example, because on the highest difficulty it was basically one-hit-kill. At least in COD4, that was the last one I played. The pacing of the levels actually made it into something bordering on a shooter puzzle game, where you had to approach each room in a super specific way to not die. Recommend trying it out if you like that type.
>>
>>381553797
Generally agree, although it definitely depends on the player. I know W3 combat only became interesting with the difficulty turned up, where you actually had to think about monster weaknesses and use all those wacky little subsystems to come out ahead. On normal it was just a button masher.
>>
>>381553482
>5
I can't. From the recent memory only Nier: Automata comes to mind.
Besides the enemy attack / HP boost (some anons also mentioned more aggressive behavior but I'm not sure if that's a fact) you lose drone auto targeting, can't equip certain training-wheels chips.
Last of us had sparser supplies/loot with higher difficulty, more sensitive enemies (could notice you from larger distances), sparser checkpoints, no 'super hearing' that allowed you to see enemies through walls. On the highest difficulty there was no hud so you had to count your bullets or take time to check guns in inventory.
>>
>>381552872

He asked me a question. I would never say one of my accomplishments is video game related. That's just dumb.
>>
>>381554207
I don't think even I can name 5 I was hoping I'd get some recommendations all that comes to mind is Terraria expert mode and thief where changing the difficulty added new enemies and objectives to the maps
>>

Literally all of them. You only grind if you're too bad to beat the game on the higher difficulty without grinding, in which case why are you playing on the higher difficulty?

>I would never say one of my accomplishments is video game related. That's just dumb.
You're already posting on /v... wtf are you on about? Not saying that pride in videogame accomplishments makes sense objectively, but if we're all crazy, then you're right here in the madhouse with us anon.
>>
>>381556120

Im definitely not normal. I just don't think it's healthy to consider video game prowess an accomplishment. I'm not even against hard mode. I just think people unnecessarily torture themselves and miss out on shit starting on the hardest difficulty.
