I've never played this series before. Where should I start?

Play the first three games in order then quit.

With MGS1. Play them in release order, not chronological. The HD collection for ps3 and 360 is excellent it has the substance version of MGS2 (with the hundreds of short VR and extra missions, the version of MGS3 with the 3d camera that transforms the game and the ports of the original msx2 versions of Metal Gear 1 and 2, and Peace Walker.

1 -> 2 -> 3 -> Peace Walker -> Ground Zeroes

Play 4 if you want to watch a movie, The Phantom Pain if you want to play something with decent gameplay and that's it

I actually bought a PS2 slim and MGS1 & 2 because I used to love them as a kid... I was not ready for how badly they've aged. Wasted money.
