So I'm a gameplay over most things kinda guy, I don't like the aesthetic of this game but is the gameplay fun/satisfying/good? How is the movement, and combat?
>>
>>381520365

Dude, it's THE BEST metroidvania ever. YEARS from now people will still be using it as the benchmark.
>>
>>381520365
I've played HK for two hours. I like Ori's visuals and movement better, but HK has it beat in combat and sort of in exploration so far. Supposedly HK is like 30 hours, too. I played through both versions of Ori and have like 20 hours total between them.
Ori 2 should really consider melee, the first was supposed to have melee attacks too but they scrapped it.

You can practically smell the undertale fanbase in this thread.
Marrow is superior in every way possible. Rain World is superior in every way possible.

>Non existent difficulty
>Piss poor OST composed by some literal who that clearly can't make good sounding audio for shit.
>Flash based artstyle akin to binding of isaac (large outlines, 0 detail, 0 shading, just simplistic looking shit that your average deviant art novice could shit out)
>Comic relief enemies and bosses that cater towards the braindead Undertale crowd, rather than being intimidating
>Shit rewards for exploring
Woah...I got shit fillter-tier crest I'll never ever use....simply epic...
>Juvenile lore made so that retards can develop their own head canon because the devs have so little faith they can make some actual worthwhile lore
>No optional hard as fuck area at the end of the game so that elite players like myself can actually extract some fun out of this dull mess of a game
Not everybody likes playing baby mode easy shit.

How will hollow cucks ever recover?

There used to only be one thread at a time near release. Some guy has a huge hateboner for this game and is roleplaying as a shill for the game by making a million threads for it. It's more a Dark Souls mechanic than Metroidvania, so people can focus in different "builds" and such.

What I think really sets it apart though is how well it's pulled off. Every area offers unique challenges, every enemy has unique behavior, and every mechanic is made use of in almost every possible way. It all feels very natural too, because they introduce it all in an order that allows you to adapt. It's possible to beat the game without dying once because there are no real surprises.

>Every area offers unique challenges
>every enemy has unique behavior
>and every mechanic is made use of in almost every possible way.
No they don't. Every area felt the exact same, so much so that I didn't have to change up anything about my play from start to finish.
Every enemy felt like fodder, including the bosses. There's no difference between an enemy rolling at you or running at you.
As for the mechanics, once again, you are wrong. There's a few movement options that are used once or twice but that's all. Other than that they have limited use and can easily be ignored.
>>
Dark Souls works because there's such an insane variety of ways to tackle the game. Hollow Knight falls short on delivering what it wants because the combat is one dimensional, repetitive and boring beyond comprehension. Outside of a couple of the HardMode spirit bosses and the Arena, nearly every second of combat in this game feels like a chore you have to get through to get to more story.
I kept hoping the combat would get better but it never did, which only made the already too-long game feel even longer.

7/10 best I can do.
>>
>>381524151
Every area introduced at least one new platforming mechanic, they couldn't add any more without it feeling like a jumbled mess. How else do you expect them to vary it?

What would you want from enemies if changing their attacks and movement isn't important?

The bouncy shrooms are the only thing I can think of that aren't used more than a few times. Maybe you didn't find any of the secret areas hidden throughout the game?

>Every area introduced at least one new platforming mechanic, they couldn't add any more without it feeling like a jumbled mess.
If you're referring to things like the platforms in whatever the fuck the green area was called that flip when you jump on them, or the floor breaking in the deep nest, then these are all so insignificant that they don't change up how you play at all.

>How else do you expect them to vary it?
I expect the new hazards to make me play somewhat differently to have to deal with them.
There's no point in having hazards that change absolutely nothing.

>What would you want from enemies if changing their attacks and movement isn't important?
Once again, they didn't change them enough.
A game like Marrow is what does enemy design correctly. Each enemy in that game will fuck you up unless you know how they work and deal with them in the correct way.
Meanwhile in Hollow Knight, I saw a new enemy and just charged it and killed it, usually taking 0 damage in the process because what is changed about them is so insignificant that it may as well not exist.

>Maybe you didn't find any of the secret areas hidden throughout the game?

Rain World and Marrow have given me more difficulty in their early game areas than Hollow Knight has given me anywhere.
>>
>>381520365
32 hours in, Hollow Knight is in my top 3 of Metroidvanias, along with Rabi Ribi and Metroid Prime if 3D Metroidvanias count, Super Metroid if not

If I didn't spend so much time enjoying how beautiful the game is, just walking around the world and hunting for secrets, I'd probably have finished it around 25 hours in. I can't understand how absolutely horrible at gaming you'd have to be to not be able to finish Hollow Knight after 60 hours.

I didn't even know about it either until recently.

We live in a world where people find S&S, DS and HK too hard.
Marrow is actually hard in the truest sense. If you beat the game then you have every right to gloat about it, because there's no guides to help you with it, no videos or let's plays (they all end at episode 1 with the people playing it making 0 progress) to watch for help.

No problem. Enjoy enjoy.

>>381529512
Go for it.
You best not pull a "I couldn't get past the first area so it's shit" though.

Still waiting warmly for somebody to either complete the game or make it a good way through so they actually have some weight to what they say. So far all I'm hearing is the asshurt of casuals because they lack the skill to make any progress.

Have you looked at the trailer on steam of Marrow? Save yourself the money. It actually is a pain to look at. The art is so fucking shitty.
And look at the first user review on steam and guess who it is...

The art style is pure kino.
Shits on your shitty hollow cuck flash art style with ease.
>And look at the first user review on steam and guess who it is...
My reviews truly are the best, let's be honest here.
I'm way overdue to review hollow knight too. I wonder if you cucks will get triggered more than the rabi ribi autists when I reviewed their game. I wanna see which review gets downvoted more.

Fuck off Maze. No one wants to hear about the obscure game you're shilling.

Should I buy?

Stop being such a faggot, anon. I'm a masochist that beat Cave Story my first run through as a 3 heart run with polar star and no jet pack, and difficulty isn't everything. Hollow knight is a solid experience with well-placed and well-designed enemies. Marrow looks like trash, and it looks like it tried to copy the first Castlevania without any regard for thoughtful enemy placement.

>tfw love Metroidvanias and consider them one of my favorite genres but haven't played most of these games
I think I'll finally get to La-Mulana, Cave Story, and Bunny Must Die at least real soon.
>>
I normally hate Metroidvanias because I dont like running around and whacking against walls until i find the route for progression. I really liked Ori and Shadow Complex though. What should I play next?

Terraria is, quite literally, a metroidvania in the guise of a sandbox game.
Search your heart, you know this to be true.

>>Bunny Must Die
What about it?
>>Valdis Story
What about it?
I don't even know what you're implying tbqhwy.

>>381530625
I disagree, there's a plethora of interest in the games since I'm known for having only the finest of tastes.
You're only upset because you lack the skill to play vidya kino on this level.

>I'm a masochist that beat Cave Story my first run through as a 3 heart run with polar star and no jet pack
Cave story is piss easy, am I supposed to be impressed?

>Marrow looks like trash, and it looks like it tried to copy the first Castlevania without any regard for thoughtful enemy placement.
This right here is how I know that you've tried the game and quickly realized that you were a casual unable to beat it. The enemy placement is all perfect. You no doubt got stuck at a certain area (I bet you're that guy that got the reservoir and couldn't get out KEK) and cannot make any more progress, so you come here to cry about it.

Embarrassing to be honest.

>>381530812
La-Mulana is king, try to play it without using a guide. Have a note pad handy and enjoy the ride.
The other two are great too, but Bunny Must Die is incredibly good.
I even played through it a shit ton of times just to get the achievements, and I usually never bother with those.

>>381531117
I've actually played Cave Story before but have never managed to beat it. I think I've started it like two or three times, always get past the first few 'levels', then just drop it for reasons. Which is weird, because I actually really, really liked what little I played of it.

Which one of those games should I play first?

I've done similar things, like with Radiant Historia (aka my favorite JRPG of all time). I played it twice up to an area called Granorg before dropping it. Only recently did I get to finally play it to completion.

Sounds to me like you did what I did, aka tried to force yourself to play something when you weren't really in the mood for that type of game. It usually takes me a while to get hooked by jrpg's.

Anyway, I'd always recommend playing La-Mulana first. It really is as good as everybody says it is. Don't believe the shit people say about it being overly cryptic, 99% of the puzzles are pretty straight forward providing you actually put some thought into them.

Since you've played CS a few times already though and haven't finished it, I think you should either go for La-Mulana or Bunny Must Die for sure. You can't go wrong with either of them.
>>
I've been playing HK fpr about five hours now and I think that the pace of the game could be faster in terms of the overall progression. The world is huge and most of the powerups have been rather minor, the enemies and jumping segments themselves are often nice but I can't help feeling that there's some filler in there, especially when the gameplay itself is pretty safe and seen metroidvania stuff. Maybe the game picks up later and develops more character but it sure does take its time.

The sound design is great, by the way. All the different clicks, pops etc feel very satisfying and have that character that the already mentioned gameplay doesn't seem to have. The music is fine too.
>>
>>381531256
You're asking the wrong faggot.

Can't go wrong with La-Mulana or Cave Story, both are fantastic games and the epitome of the genre. Cave Story for a game that you can pick up and immediately get into, La-Mulana for something that you're willing to push through and commit to. It's the type of game where you need to keep a notebook handy.

Well Bunny Must Die is a good deal different than Rabi Ribi, so it shouldn't be too surprising. The only thing they have in common is the MC's are rabbit girls.
