Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.

Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

Clear Sky is regarded as the worst, however, with Shadow coming in at close second due to its sheer age and how bad the new tech's implementation was. If you're only worried about the best of the series, Call of Pripyat is your best bet.

Call of Chernobyl (not Shadow) is a mod for Pripyat which turns all 3 game's open worlds into one seamless (actually, there's loading screens between areas) open world with multiple factions and an ass-ton of its own add-ons

SoC is still widely hailed as the best game in the series, for a good reason.

CoP is underwhelming as hell END of the trilogy, meant for the true veterans of the series- which ironically makes its over calm mood and low difficulty even more jarring.

CoC is just meme trash, mimicking all the worst open-world sandbox games in their worst ways. The reason STALKER is so liked is because you're NOT just surviving for the sake of survival, but actually PROGRESSING somewhere.

Nothing. I just happen to have lurked and posted in STALKER threads for literally 10 years, and I *know* that many, many rookies have literally given up on the game in the Cordon area alone.

Some people love the "hobo phase", some absolutely hate it.
