3K combined has 11 2 Act Zones, and 3 1 Act Zones. That's 25 Acts in total (and even then, Hidden Palace and Doomsday don't completely count as their own thing).

Mania is implied to have 5 new Zones (via image with 5 hardboiled heavies). With a 40/60 split between new and old, we need around 7 old Zones. So 12 Zones, with 2 Acts a piece, that gives us 24 Acts. And that's WITHOUT cop-out shit like Hidden Palace and Doomsday. I'm sure there will be some Boss-only Acts in Mania as well.

BTS and ATS are garbage gameplay wise though. Level design is shit, physics are shit, and there's no utilizing momentum at all. Just a bunch of gimmicky levels.

The only good thing to come out of them was the god tier soundtracks and the cutscenes and I'm sure Mania will at least match them in those departments as well.

I replayed it immediately after playing the Genesis games and CD. While there a definitely more boosters/springs in 4, the difference isn't as huge as some people make it out to be. 3&K had plenty of boosters too.

Because it was made on a low budget and they wanted to do some really bad cel-shading to pretend it looked better than it really did. The mobile version is borderline Sonic Heroes level of quality if not maybe worse. What really offends me is the backgrounds, though, which are just.. 2D images with some basic 3D models here and there. It looks like someone tried to copy Donkey Kong Country and then made it all bland and soulless and plastic-y.

Even Episode 2 does things way better, by having more of a budget to have actual 3D assets and ditch the terrible cel-shading attempt, but it's still a budget title.

It's not really a good game on its own merits. 75% of its stuff, if not more, is ripped from the classics wholesale, and the new gimmicks and ideas it adds are only occasionally interesting. No one likes the sleepy, boring twist on S1 special stages, nor are the room-tilting puzzles in Lost Labyrinth very fun either. The physics are something everyone bitches about, but even without taking them into mind (despite them working for S4 at least) the game doesn't take advantage of HD resolutions to help you see what's coming, and it is kind of filled with leap-of-faith level design where you have no idea what's off camera, but it's probably gonna hurt or kill momentum.

By its own merits, Sonic 4 Episode 1 isn't very good. Episode 2 is better, but the boss fights are retardedly boring besides Metal Sonic's, and it isn't exactly a great game either. But when it has better games it's trying to both ape and live up to and it falls short of almost all expectations, there's a problem.

pretty easy to do when they are just reusing art assets. a huge part of sonic levels was new level art for each stage (as opposed to other platformers like SMW that reuse stuff between worlds even late into the game), when they are just rehashing old stuff it's less special.

I hope there's a good number of original stages. I really have no desire to play romhack level edits of classic Sonic zones.

There are new things here and there, like ziplines, the rolling boulders, the cards, cannons, minecarts, etc.
It's just that these gimmicks are usually treated as very specific setpieces that have their own sections rather than as actual parts of the level design, plus most of them have been in other games.

The boss fights also recycle the hell out of old Sonic tropes, with some twists, but arguably they're all for the worse.

Because A.) Sonic Team are nimrods who play hard to comfort zones whenever there's fan backlash nowadays, and B.) even for as neat as Utopia is, it's still a very unrefined concept that would need a lot of honing down and actual level design. There's also the problem that you'll notice with Unleashed to Forces, in that Sonic Team really doesn't seem to believe that player freedom is a great option anymore with how automated stages and setpieces get. Dash panels, springs both hidden and visible, scripted speed limits/caps at certain points so that Sonic can complete some cinematic loop or jump because their fucked up physics would probably not play ball but they just bandage it together to make up for it.

Also it's a lot harder than you think to create, balance and perfect open-platformer design for an entire game.

Sonic has, and will never work in 3D. Adventure was the closest, but if you go back and play it, it plays like fucking garbage. It never really has worked in 3D without compromise. Even Sonic Adventure and Adventure 2 had some pretty significant flaws with Sonic/speed levels, it's just that one could mostly ignore them if you played them straight through. Once you started going for extra missions, though, things started getting stupid. They were also relatively setpiece driven and while they tossed mechanics at you all over the place, they were simple and straightforward enough to go through. But then you'd glitch through a floor and die, or Sonic wouldn't do something quite right and slide off a ledge and die, or the camera would get stuck on a wall and you'd not see where you're going and die.

Honestly 3D Sonic games besides Generations feel like a guilty pleasure for me nowadays, and even Generations feels off at times.

Sonic can work fine. The problem is some people want 3D Sonic to play exactly like 2D Sonic, just in a 3D space. That isn't possible. Look at Mario, look at Rayman, look at Donkey Kong, etc. The 3D games don't play exactly like their 2D counterparts. Mario 64 doesn't play like World or the NES Mario games, yet it still captures the essence of the series. Sonic was simply never given the right approach.

Every game has glitches. It's just that while they had chances to happen, the Genesis games were mostly more polished compared to how the 3D games almost seem held together with duct tape. Mostly because Sonic 1 is a thing.

Also don't forget that this is the same Sonic Team that is so lazy with Sonic Adventure DX's ports that the PC version on Steam is a port of a port (Xbox Live Arcade) of a port (original PC version) of a port (Gamecube version), with more and more problems, downgrades, glitches and otherwise becoming prominent with each re-port. And until recent years, you couldn't even fix most of these problems (and the occasional ones still aren't).

Sonic rarely goes stupid fast in the Genesis games. Something like a speedier Mirror's Edge (although not first person) or even the platforming in Ninja Gaiden (the movement in those are based heavily on momentum) maybe would work. They need to test what works in 3D and crank the speed little by little until they reach the max of what's fluid and comfortable to play. I don't think they've spent any amount of time testing and tweaking that kind of stuff; every 3D Sonic seems like they just stuck with their first attempt and built around that, polish be damned.

I think the problem is that Sonic Team only understands the "go fast" aspect, so they just focus on whatever it takes to let Sonic go fast, but they fail to think about the concept of going fast. What makes fast happen, and what keeps it going. These are things you can feel were ideas behind the classic games' development, but today's Sonic games completely neglect to take into consideration.

But genuine, proper platforming levels like the first one are actually interspersed on occasion between a lot of side-scrolling and numerous gimmick levels of some sort. It's actually ridiculous how much of the game just uses its setting as an excuse to throw in a random stage-long gimmick for the hell of it, and they're usually not that good.

But the Wii U / PC version is overall mediocre. Nothing like the 3DS version, which starts off better than the console version in some ways and then nosedives into some of the worst level design i've ever seen in a Sonic game.

You think that's bad, don't fucking hold and jump the run button in the side-scrolling sections if there's precision platforming to be had. For some fucked up reason, Sonic's running-jump is absolutely atrocious to control compared to his slower jumps, which means it's incredibly easy to run-jump and fling yourself into a pit with a flimsy doublejump as some last-ditch effort for a save. Once you realize you can run and then release the run right before you jump to maintain better control, it's a little more doable, but holy fucking christ.
