Except you can. All story maps can be beaten with strategy, and at least the first couple post-game ones do this too. Usually it's the late post-game maps that require you to level up some gear or search the Item World for new equipment to beat.

Disgaea 3 and 4 also have stuff like the Item World Survival where team composition is important if you want to do it near the recommended level.

I always prefer the crafty solutions to Disgaea stages over the power level. Steamrolling everything with MC is boring. It's playing the tactical game, where your dudes die in a 1-1 fight with the enemies that makes the main game fun. She was cool at the beginning, but she fell into the same "repeat the exact same line in every single cutscene a thousand times" rut like every other character. Their quirks we're their driving force as a character, and that made them so unbearable. Sure, Valvatorez's quirk was his driving force as well, but at least it was driving him not to a goal like the others, but to a means. It didn't define his character.

That's why I enjoyed Disgaea 5's cast so much. Their quirks were mostly just speech patterns or their personality in general. Their characters weren't tied down by their goals being literal jokes.

The only nice things I have to say about Fuka is that she looks cute without the hat, and that she's busted in DD2's main story because of her exp scaling.
Otherwise, she's so shit it spread to other characters.
Some of her one-off scenes aren't the worst thing in the world. Hell, I even enjoyed her pushing the Valvatorez/Fenrich faggotry. But overall, Disgaea 4 was a worse game because she was in it. If Fuka actually died, no backsies, she wouldn't have dumbed down the party, Desco wouldn't have turned into a complete retard and Desco additionally would have gotten some more complex emotions to work through as a result. As I understand it: NIS lost most of their regular staff some time after Disgaea 4. I don't know why off the top of my head.
This is why they don't make as many games anymore. Before, they produced a game a year, from Disgaea to Disgaea 4. Some of the working projects they had at the time kept them going for a few years (Guided Fate, DD2, and Witch), but once they finished those, they had nothing built by most of that old staff anymore.
If you have noticed, NIS mostly puts out Indie-quality games now, like Yomawari, or that one with the fucked up name (H#tlniq or some shit), or weird half-assed extensions of shit like Guided fate that nobody cares about, and thus risks no fame damage to anything valuable. Mostly they have been porting things, while NISA has started shoveling a massive amount of shitty localization down the pipeline.

My wild, unfounded guess is that NIS is hemorrhaging, but NISA is managing to produce enough revenue thanks to shit like Danganronpa and other weird shovelware to fund this new staff's training.

Now, Disgaea 5 is not cut from the same cloth as the more recent shit NIS has produced. It's neither indie-quality, nor a port, nor a weird extension of a franchise nobody cares about. And it more or less works.
My even more crazy and unfounded theory is that NIS paid out the ass to get some temporary competent staff, or else massively incentivized what remaining good staff they had to make something to convince people they aren't quite dead.

My doomsday flag, however, is the Asagi plot from Disgaea 5. Asagi remains as the only loose end from the old days of NIS. To give so much into the question of "what the fuck is Asagi" in one sitting seems either like they are keeping everyone around for more, teasing like they are making something out of it (Which, given the personality of NIS, brings >>381524294 to mind), or else they are just doing a crappy job of tying that end so they can be done with it.

In Disgaea 5's post game, what determines a character is their base evility slots, Overloads, and unique skills.
Everyone is otherwise basically identical. The Lady Fighter is considered the bronze standard. Why have anything else when you could at the very least have her +a bunch to Attack% from moving?
The Armor Knight is a top-tier unit, even among uniques, because of Galahad's Shield. It allows her to attack and defend at the same time, which means Swift Stance (And Force Counter) proc, meaning she can exchange a 20 hit counter combo with any unit at will that survives that much, supercharging stuff like Fighting Spirit, Rage Charge, and Impact Charge.
The Sage because Land Decimator.
There are a few other okay support humanoids, and absolutely, the unit you love most will probably end up your strongest, but Unique just win out. Shit like Zetta's +100% attack damage for existing, Red Magnus' +80% Stats for existing, and the ever lovely Prinny Zombie Apocolypse combo that gives Laharl and Marjorita a full +200% to their attack, and gives anyone with any evilities related to Prinny death a nice boost too (One of the new helper prinnies has a common evility that gives +10% stats per dead prinny. You will absolutely cap it)

Oh, don't worry about this while playing through the story. Literally nothing you do now will have an impact greater than about 30 seconds once you hit medium postgame.

Playing from the oldest you are willing to go is a good idea. Disgaea is a series that is very hard to play older games in.
The games streamline a lot between titles, and older ones can feel very slow. If you started with Disgaea 5, then went and played vanilla, ps2 Disgaea 1, you would probably gnaw your fingers off.
The Steam Disgaea's are pretty good. Unless you are really, really into completionism, don't bother with Disgaea 1's postgame. Maybe get up to Priere, but more is probably overkill.
Disgaea 2 is where you should get autistic. There is much more to help you along.
The Vita games are also good. Disgaea 3 is generally regarded as pretty weak. Disgaea 4 is a mixed bag. Some people like it just as much, if not more than D1, others hate it. I say it's a good "reasonable" entry to the series if you don't want to go way back.
DD2 is only on PS3 (For now), and it isn't great. Gameplay it's better than 4, most Disgaea games just get better as the series goes, but everything else is weak, sans the Baal fight. That is fucking nuts.
Disgaea 5 as a starting place means you just want to get it over with, which is fine.

Also, look into some of the spinoffs. Soul Nomad is regarded as utterly fantastic, and something you should absolutely play (PS2 only though. It received no love). Z.H.P is also generally considered very good. Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom are unique, and pretty good.
Witch and the hundred knight has a great plot (I don't know how to put it. The story IN the game is meh, the story surrounding the events in the game is fantastic) but mediocre gameplay. Prinny is fun, but a tad obnoxious.
These games will also teach you about these post-game characters and why everyone else seems to give a shit about them.

Does anybody else have the problem of not being able to finish Disgaea games of late?

I've started with D2, had a blast with the series until D4, but since DD2, I haven't finished anything. D5 was the game I pretty much bought a PS4 for, initially. Still haven't played it very far.

I'm thinking it just may have to do with the abundance of story as the games went on. One of the great things about D2 was that not every stage had a story segment before it. Because the story really doesn't matter. Now every stage gets some story attached to it, and it makes the early game a slog I can't seem to push through.

In the end i just downloaded the prepatched rom for both games.
They fixed many things in LaPucelle like Homard's 10x attack against overlords and they added more bosses to item worlds.
Also they added an (untraslated) side story with Laharl, Etna and Flonne, New combo attacks with almost every character, and 4 DLC characters Rozalin, Ellie and Cornet (Marl Kingdom) and Hero Prinny.
Don't know much about Makai Kindom's remake other than it has an extra story mode with Zetta's daughter or something.

There's usually a gag weapon in the game's that's Zetta's old book body. I know it's not the same, but it eases the pain a bit. Plus, the Zetta Beam has gone to new heights. The Neo Zetta Beam is always a crowd pleaser, but the One-Inch Zetta Beam from DD2 was great.

Zetta and Petta's relationship is absolutely adorable though, and completely makes up for it.

Excellent, I knew playing D3 was the right choice. I've only beat 1 & 2 so I didn't know if he was in the later games or not as a book. But in D2 he was great. Hearing I'M A BADASS! every time he goes up a step or attacks was great. That's half the fun of using him so as long as he does that in non-book form I think I'll be ok. If you have the patience, you can unlock Book Zetta in Phantom Brave, then start Another Marona to use him (or any of the other post game/hermuda characters) from level 1 through that story.
Zetta is a fucking beast if you use him that way. Not quite Baal level, but there's still a solid chance he'll just overpower Sulphur at the end.

Disgaea 5 has a real problem with that. A lot of the old voice sets are butchered for some reason. One of the Magic Knight sets literally has one clip it uses for everything (Outside of the voice test. That's how they get ya!).

Do you Failure Fuse? You apply the Failure title to your item of choice, bring some of the nice, mana-rich items from your level 800 failure dungeon, fuse them into your item, then give it a better title.
By doing this, you can get stats way, way higher than you otherwise could. When your item gets so buff that even with a Failure title it's stronger than the loot you bring home, Failure fuse your loot.
You'll want at least three "passable" items for
the Zetta fight. 1 for Marona, and 2 for the guys killing the mob, and hunting down Zetta.
Once you do that, go to a non-failure dungeon

Also, only for Zetta, he has a "dead zone" where he can't get far enough away from you to hit with Zetta Beam, or close enough to hit you with anything else, for a good 2-3 actions. You can cheese him pretty easily if you can just dent him a few times from that range.

Good characters that you are likely to have at this point are Asagi or the Unlosing Ranger, the Hero Prinny, Mid-Boss/Laharl, or just a swarm of bottlemail.

Of course, the real challenge with beating Zetta to use him in Another Marona is that Carona is by far the most effective way to deal with Zetta, since you can confine her over on that little island to get more boys over there.

I agree. There are few characters I dislike more than Seraphina. And I'm not even talking Disgaea, or NIS characters. I mean in general.

The only parts I can place for sure are that not only did her character not grow at all over the game, but her mere presence made the other characters (mostly Red Magnus and Zeroken) less able to develop as well, since the exact same "lol I just shot them, isn't that hilarious?" scene kept playing out.
