Pretty fun. I couldn't get into the older fallout games but this game had me hooked.

I couldn't get into the older fallouts either and unfortunately I didn't dig this one as well. However that was on me and my own personal tastes. For what I played I found it to be pretty good. Albeit a bit tough.

Very similar to the old Fallout games, but updated. I haven't found anything that didn't work, and when someone does, the creator fixes it. It's got some fun lore, and the various mechanics are all fleshed out. Like stealth isn't just based on sneak stat and line of sight, but also amount of noise made and how that noise echos off of walls. Combat generally feels pretty rewarding too.
>>
>>381496187
Everyone keeps saying it's like the original fallout, but which parts? Exploration? Writing? Sense of Humor?

A bit of all of that, honestly. You've got a megacorp that went under that left a lot behind in the form of ruins and logs and child companies, a shit ton to explore, freedom of choice in combat vs. diplomacy vs. stealth and with dialogue in general. Honestly exploration is a bit better even, more to explore at least since there are no "travel tiles".
>>
>>381496284
All of it. It is Isometric view point, art style is similar with more updated graphics of course, post apocalyptic setting, has same sort of humor etc.

I like how underrail enables my obnoxious dick-ass playthrough. I figured throwing weapons and traps would be useless, but instead I'm sneaking around putting bear traps everywhere and poisoned caltrops and shit it's great. so many levels where you can creep around in vents too
>>
>>381496865
Yeah, some of the play styles are really fun. Doing mostly mind control with some thermal stuff, feels great getting that pack of rathounds in the DC to tear each other apart, the last one dying right before reaching me.

Some of those fish for drugs are stupid though. Took points for that and for crafting headbands. Gotta try the poisons next time around.
>>
>>381498194
Crafting is fine when it is a optional addition to the game. It should be there to enhance an already great item/weapon system. It should not BE or replace the system though.
>>
>>381494736
Pretty unbalanced, almost as bad as Arcanum. It's not like older fallout where it actually is possible to murder hobos your way through the game, and strategy is almost non-existent due to enemies just being meat shields or mental fortresses. Either you sneak (which gets you nowhere real fast) or you grind and grind and grind. First half of the game is pretty fucking boring too. That said I did enjoy the ivory tower design and minmaxing glory.

My favourite part of the game was exploring the lower underrail and taking on all the combat encounters you find as you venture through the caves and tunnels and railways. Most of them were the perfect level of challenge for me, usually taking two or three attempts before I survived. Fighting the Lurkers at their base was a highlight.
>>
>>381498489
Yeah if you build a terrible character it's pretty unforgiving.
>>
>>381494736
Similar in that they are both isometric, turn based and set in a post-apocalyptic world. UnderRail is hell of a lot more combat and exploration oriented.

My only problem was that there's no ingame map
I mean there's lots of papers everywhere the protagonist should at least draw some basic map there but I had to do it myself in real life so fuck that this isn't 1990s where I had to write down codes and shit again.
>>
>>381498947
I love building terrible characters because it appeals to my inner masochist. However I don't enjoy having near zero strategy due to game design.
>>
Free Drones a shit
>>
This is a great game but it's also a niche game.

Don't buy this game and expect fast paced gameplay or a great story or characters. This game is for people who like experimenting with different builds with a fallout type of combat system. The game has excellent combat if that appeals to you and a competent crafting system as well.
I felt the game had nice atmosphere and good music too but that's much more personal preference.
>>
>>381499164
There's strategy but it is dependent on the player being intelligent.
>>
>>381499154

Proxy + Punch does huge amounts of damage, always look forward to delivering that
And Breakdown + Bilocation is wonderful fun
>>
>>381499165
Gassing them with the CAU was fun. Got frantic when I set the bomb off, had gotten spotted the moment I did. The rest was a race to shove past everyone and get out. Took a few tries.
Felt kinda bad when the dude that rigged the canister with the timer "vanished mysteriously" after I ratted him out though. Wonder what happened to him, if he wasn't simply taken out back and shot.

>>381499227
I liked the story. More general lore than story though I guess.
>>
I've been using a build guide and everything is going well, there were some tough spots but I managed to beat them in the end. Now I'm doing a clean up before going to the DC

Fuck the gauntlet though.

I tried to play a mage in this game and I was having a blast until I got to the point where there were a whole squad of guys that had grenades. I could survive multiple gunshots/melee attacks but a single grenade would one hit me. I couldn't manage to stun or kill every guy and the moment one of them got a free move they would just one hit me with the grenade.

This is the first time I heard anyone suggesting that you can't be a murder hobo in Underrail. You are a scavenger. It can't get more murder hobo than that.

>and strategy is almost non-existent due to enemies just being meat shields or mental fortresses

Again, what? Strategy is non-existent in a game where enemies call for back up, loud noise can alert enemies far away, where different enemies have wildly different resistances that you can't possibly cover with only one type of weapon, where you can stealth freely and succeed or fail based on the combination of your skill, the enemies' skill and outside factors, where you can prepare the battlefield with traps before engaging, and where enemies take cover, use strategies like poison/restealth/wait stealthed until stun kicks in, deal with you differently depending on whether you are a mage or not?

What are you talking about?

I was a massive fan of Fallout 1 and 2. I bought them both on release day.

Underrail is more evolved in some ways, and less in others. The plot is quite thin at times, and NPC interactions are minimal. The end also gets very strange.

It's an unambiguous dungeon crawl, with a really good character building system. There are TONS of ways to make viable characters.

Be aware that the game is EXTREMELY long and difficult. I personally cannot believe that I finished it.

you're in luck then, full psi is considered one of the most "retard proof" builds in the entire game

for stats: at least 7 int so you can take the fun perks, will is your best friend, do not abandon your best friend, and you can safely ditch strength and perception at 3 and never look back

for the rest read up a bit on the perks, see which ones you like, adjust your other stats around that and lastly pick either tranquility or psychosis, they'll determine what sort of wizard you are

for skills, maximize your psi skills, and aside from those I'd suggest maximizing both hacking and lockpicking so you'll have maximum combat, full psi is also one of the few builds that can actually afford to waste points so if you want to see diplomacy options pick one of the diplo skills and pick a couple of crafting skills you like
>>
>>381502670
underrail is not demanding at all, it most certainly does not demand anything near the power required to run 10y old games
>>
>>381502665

tranquility: which eschews sheer numbers in favor of allowing you to use more spells per turn allowing more control and combos

It shouldn't come to that. When you select where to throw just keep in mind that worst case scenario is that your throwing will be off by 4 tiles.

So, have you made up your mind? Psychosis and tranquility require really different builds to truly shine both in terms of stats and support skills, so it's best to decide in advance.
>>
>>381503942
I was thinking maybe Tranquility with stealth if that would work
>>
>>381503479
I had plenty of times when I was the only one caught in the blast.

>>381503929
For some people, yeah. I actually forgot that there wasn't a map. DC I needed a map for for sure at the start.
>>
>>381503329

Fuck off, man, getting through the Junkyard when you've put all your points into getting Cut-Throat as soon as possible- and STILL haven't gotten it yet, because the cost is so fucking punitive- leaves you completely shafted for options.

I am aware there are other melee skills. I tried getting them. They did fuck-all, and the armor didn't do shit for me either.

It's the fucking Cathedral quest in FO1 all over again.
>>
>>381504015
Can confirm it works. Stealth means you get the jump on them, and then with tranquility you can get several steps ahead of everyone. Locus of Control is great with that. Turns anything into an AoE.
>>
>>381504015
it most certainly does, in fact there is a psi-skill that allows you to instantly restealth in combat
I would recommend investing in a good shield generator though, because while stealth + tranquility will ensure that 99% of the enemies you meet won't come near touching you, the 1% that does will hit hard
>>
>>381503929
Not really. Most players do fine without any kind of map, but if you feel confused just make your own map, something crude like circles and sticks should suffice. Alternatively there are several fan made maps you can download, ranging from collages to excel maps and full 3D maps made in Unity.

>You can also tell the guy that you only joined to get back the cube they stole
Best game.
>>
>>381504015
Absolutely.

With tranquility the trick is that in order to get the benefit of this spec, you should do everything in your power to not get hit. Once you lose HP, the bonus will be gone until you heal yourself back to max. So avoidance is a great way to go about this. This also means that you can safely drop constitution and strength to the minimum, since having more health is not really useful when you don't want to use any, and you won't be wearing armor heavy enough to require higher than minimum strength.

For even better avoidance you should definitely take both lockpicking and hacking, so you'll have access to ventilation systems or turn off/take control of security systems.

You will be wearing light armor, so take tailoring. Also take electronics for shields, cloaking devices, psi headbands, etc.

You can take some persuasion/intimidation if you wish. It's more of a just for fun thing, but with high will it will be dirt cheap so you can afford it.

Other optional skills that can be good for you are dodge, evasion, biology, throwing, traps, pickpocket. Neither is absolutely necessary, so mix and match these as you like.

I don't know if it's because I don't like games like these or what, but for some reason I can't get into Underrail though I wish I could. I've never really played games like this so I'm kind of confused about how to play it.

Keep at it, start over with another build if you feel you messed up, and you'll get the feel of it.

I told that to the lady investigator for the entry interview. Ended up winning the combat, and massacring the entire Institute room by room, finding the elevator to DC, and after a few attempts survived the Faceless assault long enough for the elevator to arrive and I made it down. Pretty fun, though I feel like I might have missed out on a few quests...

>I had plenty of times when I was the only one caught in the blast.

Again, avoid throwing to a place that within a range of 4 tiles to you. As long as you do this, the grenade will never hit you. Of course, sometimes you have no option but to gamble, because you are surrounded or whatever. I like to shoot a morphine in cases like that, just to prepare for the worst.

There is a very simple solution to all of your Junkyard problems: buy molotovs. Lots of them. Pretty much any build can make it through Junkyard with enough molotovs.

Once you learn that you've pretty much got the game down and shouldn't have much trouble after that.

I'll try to remember that for my next run, I've just got the mutagen puzzle left.

I thought I had reached a realization, guess not.
I'd skip it and probably wouldn't have any trouble, but it's what my character would do.
>>
>>381507447
All mutagen puzzles are not born equal, some are just harder than the others. That being said, to this day I a haven't seen any that was too difficult to be worth the trouble.

So just keep trying, you can do it.

Underrail is good but it has a much more pronounced combat-focus than the two Fallout games - so depending on what kind of RPG you're looking for this might not be your cup of tea. However, Underrail has better combat so it feels much less tedious.
>>
>>381503021

there is a third option, you can be a Muscle wizard and punch shit with your mind

>>381512546
Psi monks can still specialize though. It's less important for them since they don't build around one of these two feat paths, but it can still give nice bonuses.

Yup.

>and does anyone know how well it performs with the steam controller?

No clue, but my guess is not well. This game gives plenty of ways to navigate inventories, recharge things, etc, but the most comfortable is using the keyboard shortcuts. And there are many, many of them.

By the way it doesn't really have the same pace as the Fallouts. It requires some investment of your time and attention, so this isn't a game that you can play casually. If you are looking for something to occupy for a long time, you've found the right game.

>squishy stealth trapper so every basic grunt has superior durability and damage output, roughly five of them in the same room
>cornered in an apartment facing the main hallway, four of them bunched up outside
>throw a bag of caltrops on the floor, a net over their leader, then a molotov covering all of them
>>
>>381513367
Use stealth to scout and initiate combat. Remember that different abilities emit different amount of noise. So for example if you are telepathically giving someone a stroke that's going to be completely silent. But if you make someone explode in a fiery inferno that isn't going to go unnoticed in a more populated area. And try to learn and familiarize yourself with as many of the psi spells as you can at the start. They are all going to be useful in different situations. Mental stuff bypasses armor but only works on things with a brain, electric spells work amazingly against robots, stuff like that. You can learn two of the first level spells for free, you only have to pay for the third one.
