I've played Drakengard 1 and 3, and the origonal Nier, and honestly I have to say it made no difference to me when I played Automata. I felt no connection to the previous games with the exception of maybe Nier, and nothing I learned in any of the previous game improved anything about Automata. Automata was an excellent experience by itself. While I agree that people should play the previous games because they are good games, I really don't feel like they're required by any means. You can easily jump into automata knowing nothing and it'll be about the same.

For 9S the most broken weapon is spear of the usurper, do a quest involving scanning the desert for artifacts, get that monster to level 4 and rape the game.
Virtuous weapons are some of the best in the game, use them on 9S too, he's generally better with large swords than 2B.
Also don't forget that he has a heavy string by doing dodge into light string.
