Are the newer Obsidian games good? Sell me on them.

No, they aren't.
Nope.
Pillars is an SJW wonderland and Tyanny is a visual novel not a video game
As per usual. Obsidian cannot create good content on their own. They can only ride on the coat tails of better dev teams

One changed backer message does not equal SJW. I mean there's little excuse for it but that doesn't mean the entire game isn't worth playing. Do you have any other reasons?
What's wrong with Tyranny having a lot of dialogue?

Tyranny doesn't have a lot of dialogue. It is wholly dialogue with a shitty combat aspect tacked on. Have you ever heard the phrase "Show don't tell"? Because Obsidian clearly has not.

I liked Tyranny quite a lot, and it just got some DLC that expands the main campaign a little (which I think it needed). They're going to do at least one more DLC, not sure what it will provide. It's a very linear game, but with choice and consequence within that linearity.
Pillars of Eternity is much less linear, larger, more complex, but it has a reputation for being boring. Maybe it was the mood I was in, at the time, but I enjoyed it quite a lot. Though I don't think it's the best game of this type I've ever played. I much prefer Tyranny. I still think it's worth playing.
I'm in a similar boat, considering getting Torment Tides of Numenera. Haven't played it yet. Mulling over whether it's worth the price.
