I'm glad the series isn't dead, but I'm incredibly jaded about the emphasis on massive procedurally generated environments and the create your own character to build-your-own crew setup.

It's a fun idea, but anything involving a structured story or genuinely distinctive areas seems like they would be put through the wringer as a result.

NMS was done by a small indie studio that was rushed to release. This is being done by a large, experienced studio and team that is taking all the time they need for development. But of course I'm sure you all knew that and just ignored it because being anything but a jaded contrarian will get you banned. Unless Vivendi buys them out, there's a good chance this will do what it's aiming to do.

So idk, maybe this is the game Michel Ancel always wanted to do, but it seems pretty far removed from the things people ended up liking about the original game. Weird conflict.

When all they talk about is quantity over quality The NPCS and environments inevitably boil down to copy pasted templates and ideas that collapse under their own weight.

I have to say that was highly impressive it's basically a space explorer's wet dream to be able to leave the planet and enter another one seamlessly, the problem now is that people will expect there to be a ton of planets to explore but what these people don't realize is that all those planets are going to be randomly generated, this will not end well. The only smart thing to do is cut down the scale of the game and have a realistic amount of explorable planets that can be hand designed. Also I bet jewbisoft is happy that the engine exists and they are probably going to milk it with more open world trash in the future.

He makes it sound like all the planets will be handcrafted and I wonder how detailed the can make the cities when the scale of the game world is this huge.
If they manage to make the cities as detailed as in something like GTAV then I'd say they succeeded but it's probably highly unlikely.

Also important thing about this kind of game is that they have you start really small with no traversal options other than the basic walk, run and jump so that the player learns to appreciate the little things in this giant game world.

Even with that in mind, I think he would've been better off just making this a new, unrelated game. BGE isn't a big enough name that it'll draw in that many fans and the differences from the original only seem to put off existing fans.

I don't even care about the game. The engine itself looks really impressive. It'd be better used for a super scale rts. Can you imagine Supreme Commander or Planetary Annihilation running on that scale? You could have simultaneous ground and space battles that you could zoom into all day long.
>>
>>381466210
You can't make several planets worth of game environments without some level of procedural generation.

Honestly graphical fidelity is the least of the game's potential problems, that's not something they should be focusing on. But I realize you're just shitposting.

To the No Man's Sky Haters...

You.
Yes, you. The one screaming, "There's no multiplayer!" and "Sean Murray lied to us!" and other slurs I dare not mention.
Tread lightly.
You are one. We are hundreds, thousands. Millions. You aren't just IN the minority; you ARE the minority.
I don't feel awkward or anxious playing No Man's Sky around others, and your words don't affect me. Many others, however, are coming out of their closet for the first time in their lives. This is the first time many are enjoying the beautiful world that has been procedurally generated for us - and it IS beautiful. Incredibly so. DON'T ruin this for them. We No Man's Sky fans may have our differences, but we will not hesitate to come to the aid of our fellow explorers, especially against someone who so virulently slurs that which has brought us all together.
Don't take this the wrong way. I don't hate you. I don't fear you.
I pity you.
I'm sorry that you feel this way towards us. I'm sorry that No Man's Sky is such a bane to your existence. And I'm sorry that you are missing out on such a wonderful experience. Mostly, though, I'm sorry that you feel the need to go around and publicly chastise and berate others. I'm sorry that, to ensure your own validity, you need to make others feel invalid. I'm sorry that your self-worth is so infinitesimally miniscule that you have to make others feel less-than-human, at least in your own denatured mind, just to feel whole. I am truly sorry that day-in and day-out you have to put up with your worthless, meaningless, Shakespearean tragedy of a life.
I ask you politely to cease your unnecessary cries for attention, and instead invite you to join our ranks. Uninstall Call of Duty, start up No Man's Sky, and breathe in the splendour and the amazement of your first planet, and then, maybe, just maybe, you'll see what you've been so hopelessly searching for this whole time.

The game certainly looks ambitious but I have my doubts. Ubi is prone to promise and show stuff that end up either downgraded, cut or a straight up buggy mess. I'll give them credit when ALL that stuff he just talked about is actually in the game and functioning. BTW, the Vivendi deal. Have we heard anything about it yet or is it still up in the air, so to speak?

>you don't have to play as the monkey

Vivendi definitely happening end of the year.

Ubisoft never release early prototypes so the communication is really weird here.
I think they know Vivendi will probably cancel it. So they made it public so that it's not canceled without anyone knowing.

>>
So this is pretty much Ancel's own Star Citizen?

Seems neat, hope he can pull it off
>>
>>381484284
You should realise that most environments are procedurally generated to some degree, though. Procedural generation is not particularly new and doesn't mean a game is going to be shit, as long as they actually do something with it.

In the vid Ancel mentioned that they will be dressing things up with landmarks, etc. They don't want the world to be empty. Now take a look at No Man's Sky, all they did was yell about procedural generation and how there were going to be endless worlds. That's not the case here, for BGE2 they want the player to be able to move around freely within one system if I understood it correctly, and they want to dress things up themselves and have different biomes. The stuff that they're showing now is only a prototype for core gameplay and tech stuff as well, Ancel already said this was basically the bare minimum of stuff in the game and they're going to build on this.

I don't know how character creation is going to turn out, or what it'll be like to build your own team and whatnot, but isn't it a bit early to shit on it like that? I'd give it at least another year or 2, see what they've made of it, and then judge. They're being very open about development so it should be easy to see when or if something goes wrong.
>>
>>381484668
Funny thing is it'll probably be out before SC and be pretty decent.
>>
>>381461780
It's a bit odd, aspects look good, the whole ship movement looked very non-physical. Unless there's a lot more to it just seems worse than Star Citizen will be in a month with 3.0.

>>381484804
>I'd give it at least another year or 2, see what they've made of it, and then judge.
You mean wait five years or ten.
>>
>>381485174
Until the game is out, sure. I mean that you can probably tell whether it's shit or not if they show stuff a bit further into the development of the game, you don't have to wait until the end.

I get that, but the other thing that SC is, is a large semi-procedural sandbox set in the vastness of space. Which seemed a whole lot similar to what BG&E2 is aiming to be.

I suppose it might end like comparing ARMA + persistent world to GTA or something, but we'll see...
>>
>>381487406
I also want this to deliver cos if all of that is in the finished game then that's really cool. But I kinda feel like this should've been a new IP and not BGE. Maybe they wanted to avoid a lot of the skepticism that comes from a new IP and avoid being immediately dismissed of as NMS 2. We'll see if their ambition pays of in the end if Vivendi doesn't cancel the game.
>>
>>381488145
I don't think that's the case. They've restarted BGE2 a bunch of times, there's stuff from 2008 out there and I heard rumours that they were working on it in like.. 2012 but didn't want any of the animal hybrids in there. Either way BGE is Ancel's baby and he wanted to make 3 games from the start. Maybe this is not exactly what he had in mind 15 years ago, but I honestly doubt he would slap BGE on it if it wasn't the direction he really wants things to head in.

The company being bought also has to, ya know, agree to being bought. You can't force a buyout, not legally or ethically at least. Nintendo is too big, even if just by their branding presence, even if they aren't quite as rich as MS, and they're direct competitors. are there even any Beyond Good and Evil fans patiently waiting around for a sequel left? Wasn't the first game a commercial failure anyways?

It sounds like they're just slapping the most over-ambitious idea on this game that they can, making it look like its been in development since the last e3 trailer in 2008 so the scale is believable, and then releasing this trash off a hopefully massive hype wave.

Good thing nobody is going to fall for this since No Man's Sky warned everyone.

I get what Survive is trying to do, get more use out of the Fox engine and cash in on the popularity of MGSV
But BG&E is a cult classic game, not that big of a franchise to make into a "MASSIVE SPACE EXPLORATION" game out of
>>
LITERALLY at day 0 of development. Hope you guys get excited all over again when this gets another cg trailer
>>
>>381481508
Wow look at all that space to explore where you will find and do fucking nothing. God I hate this open world meme.
>>
will this literally be the worst vidya of 2017?

if you think the answer is no you dont deserve to be on /v/

BG&E is everything I didn't want.

If this were any other developer, I'd meme this to pieces. But because it's them, I believe in it. They can only have a handful of planets though, and man do they have to fill those planets up with varied content.
>>
>>381461780
This game is going to be a complete failure, they are going for a scale that will force them to compromise, either make a bunch of things, none of them very good, or make fewer things with a little more quality in them, either way they will have broken the promise they are making to the fans, and leave everyone enraged

NIGGER
DAY 0 OF DEVELOPMENT
>>
>>381464554
Because nobody outside of the core fanbase would be intrigued by it. The original was a cult success and didn't sell well at all. They need a unique selling point to make this game a global success.
>>
getting a lot of skies of Arcadia vibes from this, I like it

>first game ends on a cliffhanger
>sequel anticipated for years
>they finally reveal it
>it's a fucking prequel
>suspiciously similar to No Man's Sky in scale
>will absolutely not be able to run at a stable 30 on consoles unless visuals are significantly dumbed down
>it's going to be shit
>they'll never follow up on the cliffhanger

This is some monkey's paw type bullshit.

Don't get too hype my man.
They have literally just shown the capabilities of their engine and talked about some concepts they are working on.
Give it at least a year when they have some real stuff to show before you get too excited.
>>
>>381461780
yeah this game aint gonna make it. it's gonna be stuck in dev hell for years and when Ubi goes under it will be killed for good. they don't have a clear vision on what the game is going to be and just seem to be fucking around
