I really, really, like the ideas behind it, but some of the mechanics (those fucking ghosts, the limited inventory, etc) didn't translate well into fun gameplay (although it isn't supposed to be fun)

the best horror games are frustrating, but this one might be too frustrating

It has a lot of good ideas and great atmosphere, but at the same time it's obvious that it wasn't supposed to be a Silent Hill game from the very start. The game feels clunky for some reason and the main character is not very likable nor interesting because of how emotionless he is, he seems high 90% of the time.

Because it wasn't made by the original Team Silent A team, but rather their B team. In fact, SH4 was being made on par with SH3, and it had nothing to do with SH per se, just the assets. But Konami thought a brand new IP wouldn't make the cut, so they stamped the Silent Hill label on top of that and shipped it.

Ghosts are annoying, not scary. Also, they are literally dead people - some clerk nigger, redneck with bottle or some garden instrument and so on. Only fun ghosts appear at very fucking end of game, and they don't just float around and attack, but have actual design behind them and interesting mechanics (like that slut who just slithers along the floor away from you to recover). And then you just plop them down with saved up swords.

Breakable weapons are pure shit - you just store them in chest, and then find out that it's just idiotic to take them with yourself when you have limited inventory and has to carry gun with ammo for emergencies. Even with limitless pockets such mechanic just pushes you to outrun most enemies (SH: Origin demonstrated it in much brighter colors, in that game fighting anything was a chore, since your fucking crowbars kept breaking from hitting fleshy monsters).

Honestly never had problems with escorting.

Also, my own gripe is that when you revisit locations, they are fucking same 99% of time. In old SH games (and some of future ones) revisiting implied new paths, new interiors, different design of locations. In Room, it's just same places, new pack of monsters and Sullivan tailing you.

For me it is the most scary of the whole series. Too scary for me that it makes me very uneasy and is hard to play it fpr more than 40 minutes. SH1 is still my favorite though
