Does it hold up?
Yes but it's incredibly short even without the warp zones
Always does.
Yes of course it does. What's even more impressive is when you take Mario 1-3 as a trilogy and look at how well the games developed and implemented tasteful changes. They're all clearly mario, and yet at the same time they're incredibly different games. I'm aware that Mario 2 was actually doki doki panic, but at this point I think it's integrated well into the series. What I'm trying to say is that all three games together are a perfect example of what a game trilogy should be. They're timeless. The only other game trilogy I can think of that comes moderately close is crash bandicoot, but it didn't develop itself as much as mario did.
Nobody on this board has ever actually beaten it.

Where do you put the actual Mario 2 in the discussion?

As an expansion to the first game, the difficulty basically picks up where the original left off.

Damn they should have made it open world and have a bunch of fetch quests and side missions and RPG mechanics

Wouldn't the mario "Trilogy" be SMB, Lost Levels, SMB3?

You have to admit it's pretty ridiculous you can't move backwards.
>one way bullshit
But seriously the rest is pretty good
