It's either the best or worst zelda evar, depending on who you ask. I'm in the pro camp personally, but I think it's fascinating how polarizing this game is. Not talking about the random nintendo haters, either - a lot of huge zelda fanboys didn't like this game.

I'm happy they decided to shake up the formula, either way. It had long since gotten stale. Majora's Mask and Wind Waker played around with core formula (and are likewise polarizing), but really not enough to bring more than a temporary breath of fresh air. This game's an entire fresh new atmosphere.

How is any of that relevant? The entire majora fanbase split is based on whether or not you liked the time mechanic (and the mask transformations, to a lesser extent). That's it. Zelda plots can always be summarized in a paragraph, that's not the draw.

Let's reframe the discussion a little bit, since I think there are actually two things going on here. Because there's basically two types of zelda games out there.

There are those that iterate the formula, following a fairly clear line of decent from LoZ => LtP => OoT => TP => SS. These are all basically just taking what works and continually updating and polishing it without deviating too far from the core game. Discussing their merits is fairly straightforward, since it's down to specifics of level design, pacing, item selection, etc. That doesn't mean everyone will agree, of course, but they're easy to talk about.

Then you've got the games that deviate from the formula in substantial ways - AoL, MM, WW, and now BotW. These are the ones where the devs set out to shake things up, to break the mold and try something new. Talking about favorites becomes a lot harder, because it's not really about the details of the design, it's about whether you thought the big-picture mechanical changes were a good idea or not. And as we can see from the screaming, that's really subjective and hard to agree on.

Better discussion might be "what's your favorite game from each group?"
