The PS1. Sony marketed it in a way where it would appeal to regular people instead of hardcore gamers and that was a cornerstone of its success. This success was amplified with the PS2 when Sony added DVD functionality to the console and released it at a cheaper price. Along with the advent of Sports games like Madden and NBA live, Games became an acceptable hobby for regular people along with basement dwellers.

This came to a head with the PS3/360/Wii as a generation who grew up with the Sega Genesis and SNES became adults and had jobs and were able to buy their own games instead of begging their parents. Nintendo's Wii then added even more regular people to the pool with their simple games and simple controller.

Fast forward to today where almost everyone has a smartphone and at least one or two games on it and gaming has virtually become a regular hobby.

Any arcade ever built.
