Thinking back on it it's so weird to take into account internet connection while playing when 56k modems were a thing for majority of players. Started in Vanilla, played up through a couple months into Cataclysm.
Game peaked for me during Lich King.
Cataclysm just wasn't holding my attention as strongly, plus more MMOs willing to risk not playing like WoW started coming out and I realized how much more fun an MMO could be to play outside of the social aspects.

I had such a bad sinking feeling when patch 4.0 landed and so much shit had been cut off from classes and dumbed down so extensively.

At the time, I truly loved WoW. I had had some amazing experiences with some truly great friends, and had enjoyed WotLK (up until maybe the final 2 patches before 4.0), as well as everything prior since subbing around the time AQ40 released. Seeing all these new changes that dumbed the game down, dumbed classes down, and just dulled the overall experience worried the shit out of me.

Then Cata landed and the expansion itself was a fucking Cataclysm. At first it seemed great, with Heroics actually being ball-bustingly hard again like in TBC, but everything surrounding that felt so god damn fucking weak. The entire zone of Uldum was a motherfucking India Jones jerkoff for fucks sake. The game had pretty much had it's entire charm of being this rough-around-the-edges medieval war game with a bit of goof thrown in like in the old RTS game, and turned into an outright goofy fucking wacko fest.

The charm of the game between Vanilla and WotLK is long gone, and I fucking miss it.

My best memory of this game was being a low level human trying to get to Teldrassil. Getting the train to Ironforge, walking all the way through to the Wetlands. Not knowing there's a boat that goes straight to Darkshore.

The run through enemy territory was fucking scary but the relief was real when I hit finally found a night elf town.

And why is it tedious? Because Blizzard ``locked" all their content behind the max level and making the old content absurdly easy instead of making actually balanced world where you can always interact with it. Even the fucking game rushes you to the max level so you can grind the latest trinket instead of actually having fun. There is no real fear of death and there is no real joy in exploration because everything doesn't present a challenge to you. In fact the only challenge you can have in this game is to kill the fucker you aggroed so you can finally mount that flying mount which voids all the terrain, interaction, pvp and worldbuilding possible.

And now I am reminded of the absolute shit of a design that is flying mount. FUCK YOU.

Back around the release of WotLK, there used to be some pages where you could look at WoW "top lists" so to speak. You could see the most frequently killed NPCs, the most frequently looted items, the most frequently sold items on the auction house, and...the NPCs that killed the highest number of players.

Early in Wrath, the top of the list was Loken from HoL who was extremely difficult before players became comfortable with the mechanics. Directly below Loken was Defias Pillager. Pillager was killing more players every day than any other dungeon or raid boss.

iktf - I only got to go to a few Molten Core runs in a shit-tier guild (took them over 5 hours to clear it) shortly before tbc launched.

Been on private servers since, and I'm glad that I've now been able to see BWL/ZG/AQ. Still, it's a totally different beast now compared to how it was on retail. The main difference is people know about all the world buffs and consumables now.

I played back on launch and remember shadowmelding as a nelf hunter while watching horde raids rushing Ashenvale.

Before BGs was pretty fun. I always say that instanced PVP is shit and instead the world pvp with zone objectives is better. Spirit Towers and Halaa was the best PvP the games ever had aside from Southshore/Tarren Mill.

With the possible exception of launch AV when noone knew what the fuck they were doing.

My first character was a NE rogue. Had the exact same experience when I first arrived at Astranaar! It was a total bloodbath and a massive inconvenience, and I loved it.
