They both had really shitty lives growing up and dedicated everything to my brothers and I. I'll never forget the moment that shattered my perception though:

I was in the marines, and was in MCT when the first sergeant suddenly wanted to have a meeting with every marine at once. We had never seen him before but we knew his name. He came out and started ranting about how he wished he'd never had a kid and how his kid fucked up his life and how marines were better off never having them so they could focus on their careers.

We had this kid in our platoon who was a stereotypical Chad all the way. I was an awkward faggot so we hate each other but it was honestly one sided with me. He was kind of stupid, he failed every test but he tried. They had the same last name but it was a common one so I never made the connection.

He was the FS's kid. The fucking guy called his own son into a meeting where he couldn't talk back and was a faceless grunt in a sea of them, and then proceeded to shit on him in front of 500 people. Apparently it was common knowledge that he was the guys kid but I didn't know it. I never got over that, how a person could be so hateful he'd deliberately shit on his own kid in front of hundreds of people just to humiliate him.
