It feels like an actual place with actual people, that have their own problems with multiple solutions to them. There are around four or five ways to get into the town allone (work for the farmer to get his clothes to get into town, steal the clothes of the farmer to get into town, make a deal with the merchant to get into town, collect herbs and pretend you work for the alchemist, or sneak through the back - which is basically a sequence break and awards you extra exp.), and that is just an introduction into the quest design fo Gothic 2 that shines the brightest in Khorinis.

Runner ups are the Harbor Town from Risen, made by the same guys but feels a bit more restrictive than Khorinis, despite probably having more content, and Clock Town from Majora's Mask, which has the best example of intertwining gameplay mechanics and story telling in an action adventure.

targos was the only good thing about ID2, place where the quests were great, diverse, full of dialogue. further levels consisted of 100% fighting and the game became superboring, but targos is one of the best starting locations to a game ever.

Assassin's Creed may have become a a shitty series but walking around in these old ass places was the shit. I personally liked how in the first game you actually had to ride to get to places then you can explore. Fuck them for blowing up Monteriggioni.
