Dynasty Warriors 5 is still the best game in the series. There's a fucking PC version going around. There are two versions: one in Chinese and one in Japanese. I played vanilla 8

Huang Gai was easily my favourite, I really like his unique moveset, many others in the game blend together and get stale. I also like his grab supers, they're very satisfying to land. I like how there are people making noise in the background for the muscle buster one.

Sima Shi was fun, I liked his reach and the ability to completely freeze enemies with one of his combos.

Zhurong and her boomerang were fun too, though I'll admit I was first interested in her mainly for her Amazon looks and fiery personality.

it's fun to fly across the map with it

I preferred to have a character equipped with at least one of their unique weapons when I played, I just felt it was more fitting and you get an extra move anyways. With that said, I remember enjoying using the gauntlets, bombs, dual hookblades and siege spear as secondaries.

8 was pretty much an improved 7 Empires. It added stuff like the ability to always give orders in battle as long as you're highest ranking officer there, not just marshal or ruler, succession, not just taking over, it's possible to capture or kill enemy commanders, while they always automatically escaped in DW7E, you can leave your kingdom at any time without needing a rebellion or something, the AI now can actually launch rebellions, join mercenary groups and attempt to raise their own flag, while new AI rulers never ascended in DW7E.

It was missing some features initially (Emperor stuff, the option to not participate in battles, the option to set a personality type for custom characters played by the AI, basic dialogue with spouse and sworn brothers in battle), but got all of them through updates.

The issue with DW8E though is it has less cutscenes than DW7E and they were often worse than in DW7E. For example, there was basically just one ending with two variations, rather than DW7E which had the endings based on fame type and ranking. Also, no cutscenes for strong officers anymore or those transitory cutscenes from DW7E, like the one that played midway through based on your current fame. No more sworn sibling or spouse death cutscene either.

The one addition in regards to presentation is officer missions now forming quest chains of increasing difficulty and changing design (like the stealing missions - start by infiltrating mansions, the keeps then finally a national treasury - the protect missions start with protecting merchants and end by protecting a ruler), often with cutscenes for the final one (although generally they could only be seen if you're a mercenary leader, aside from one which was for free officers). The issue with all that though is that you probably won't play those quest chains multiple times. It wasn't a smart choice.
