Bullshit.

Y'all seem to remember 999 as some sort of fucking masterpiece. Replay it. It is not. The only way to find out how to get the true ending is trial and error, characters act just as retarded if not more retarded than in Zero Time (Clover kills everyone for no real reason for one thing), and last fucking boss is sudoku.

>>
>>381414952
The was initially canned due to poor sales / lack of funds from the 2nd game. Fans started a campaign to show support and get the 3rd game; 3rd game gets made.

Uchikoshi (writer / director) decides to toss the original script, get a new team with inexperienced animators, "appeal to a new audience" (and also Western audience) by copying The Walking Dead, and scraps most of the plot points that were hinted at being resolved from the first two games.

It ends about as well as you would expect. There's a particularly bullshit plot device and twist which became infamous due to any lack of real foreshadowing at all.
>>

>>

It's not exactly luck, you just go the route the game wants you to
>Agree to go with Akane for door 5
>Take the bookmark from Santa
>IIRC you're pushed to go door 7, which is where you give Clover bookmark
The only real place to mess up is choosing door 1,2, or 6. It's harder to get the safe ending than the true ending. And it at least gives it some replayability at the very least.
>>
>>381414952
>Please minimize spoilers

First two games are fantastic.

Third game requires an alien fax machine that popped out of thin air to fix all the issues it created, and it then created even more issues.
>>
>>381415025
I think the game just isn't for you the trial and error game play and the attaining of multiple endings is the whole point of the first two games.

Sudoku's fine, but it's not a good life-and-death gamble that you need to see the future to complete.

Alternate ending: June isn't retarded and just completes the sudoku on her own. Ace realises that anyone can complete a simple math problem and none of this is really going to solve his brain problem and retires. Fin~

I think it works in the context personally. It's a game revolving around the number 9, sudoku is a game with 9 3x3 grids revolving around getting 9 numbers in correct sequencing. You're right in that it's not the most tense game, but when you're locked in a room threatening to burn you to a crisp with a timelimit and after hours of turmoil trying to get out of a god forsaken survival quest and you're only a kid, a breakdown and inability to compute makes sense.
>>
>>381415412
No it's a lazy justification for putting another entry level thought experiment into the game so they can spend twenty minutes explaining the ins and outs of it

>Please minimize spoilers.

You don't make this shit easy.

First game was a fantastic 10/10 visual novel with a unique twist on the delivery of a narrative, and while it was a self-contained story it opened up a whole world of possibilites.

Second game was a 9/10 visual novel that was more of the same but improved in most ways that mattered, though the urgency in the tone of the game was decreased a bit due to executive pressuring. That said, it picked right back up in the latter portion of the game, and the ending set up the overall trilogy to be one of the best, if not the absolute best, stories in gaming.

The third game, after having the story drafted, completed, then cancelled, then revived (in that order), was pretty much re-written because the writer thought he'd get bored writing scenarios he already knew the conclusion to (even though he actually only wrote 1/3 of the scenarios in the game anyways). The new story was altered drastically, with a lot of dropped plot points from the previous games, several deus ex machina's, a much smaller variety of interaction between the cast, very rushed/crowded reveals, and an anti-climatic ending. It was very apparent that it was not the originally designed story, and it ends up coming off as almost fan-fiction, but it's officially licensed.

More so than all of the failures the third game had on it's own, it didn't live up to the potential that the first and second set it up for, and once the writer re-wrote everything because he was bored, it didn't even try to.

Shadow Hearts.

>>381415576
Like there is a legitimate alien fax machine. It's extra-terrestrial and it's origin is never explained outside of that, and it's function is to be able to send a copy of a person to a different or previous history. It's dropped into the series in the third act of the third game, when there has been NO MENTION of any extra-terrestrial stuff in any of the previous games.
>>
>>381415710
>so they can spend twenty minutes explaining the ins and outs of it

AND EVEN THEN THEY DO IT WRONG.

They spend twenty minutes explaining the Teletransportation Paradox as if it applies to it. Then, when it's discovered that it's basically a cloning machine that sends the copies to another timeline, they go WHOOPS, shit blows up, and it's never touched upon again.

999 game is good self-contained story with minor cliffhanger. Also, best artstyle.
VLR game is good self-contained story with big cliffhanger. Decent art style, but I prefered
ZTD game is shit.

Now, the problem is that 999, VLR and ZTD are supposed to be a part of bigger story in the same universe - and they do that terribly. VLR is supposed to be sequel to 999, but it does not follow the ending of the game exactly. Instead we get new story, that does not answer any of the questions that were left unanswered after 999 ending. It changes how some things works (ESPers for example, in 999 it was said that there are the transmitters and the receivers - and they can communicate with each other across time and space, in ZTD this changes, and now ESPers can just send their own consciousness to their own body in any timeline, ZTD goes even further and changes even more how ESPers work, even adding new type - MINDHACKERS, because fuck you, why not?). The characters change drastically between each game - so the Junpei from 999 is nothing like Junpei from ZTD, same with Akane, Sigme, Phi - basically it's like they are new characters. The plot twists are retarded, the puzzles are repeatable.

If you want to get into ZE, then go for 999. Don't bother with VLR unless you absolutely want more of the same but slightly different. Don't bother with ZTD at all.
Also, treat each game as separate entity.
>>
>>381417080
As retarded as Mind-Hacking was, some version of it was foreshadowed in VLR, as it was very heavily implied that Brother could read minds. That said, what we GOT was fucking retarded.

And Phi definitely didn't feel like a new character Cause she wasn't even in the game anyways.

It has a dumb story, terrible animation, mindless puzzles, shit characters, BUT

There's nothing else like it and it's a lot of fun following the story up until you realize with absolute certainty how dumb it is. It's a cool mystery and situation. It's just the writer has a track record of not knowing how to come up with a cool ending for his cool story ideas.
