That game's circumstances are unique. It's only $5. Obviously a lot of people don't mind spending $5 on a joke or a meme. It didn't even reach a milion sales in 3 years for the price of a coffee. Instead of "top influencing" it just got the marketing and exposure that indie games normally don't get and even then it didn't perform well compared to other games. Meanwhile games like Mount & Blade and Souls thrive on word of mouth, Skyrim via community, Witcher 3 via marketing and they're each multi-million sellers.
