Most companies don't even try new shit.
Its "risky" to make a new IP.

Take a close look at PS1/PS2's game libraries you will see the variety in the games is quite different from what we have now.

We're at FF15? Mario Kart 8? Tekken 7. The majority of games now are a new countless rehash.

It is the same reason we are seeing so many remakes now, make what they know will sell rather than trying something fresh or exciting.
Same goes for why we see so many "clone" games.

Mainly only indies and Jewtendo try new shit. And Indies often flat out suck.

You're forgetting all the garbage sequels of the past. All the shit movie-tie in games. And all the carefully committee-approved borefests. There were 5 shit Star Wars games for every 1 good one. People forget Final Fantasy has had far more duds then classics. And you also don't remember the constant flux of B-tier games that were absolute trash.

AAA is all but dead, and indie and crowd-funded games are on the rise. There are games for just about every niche genre, good ones and bad. Sure you can again cherry-pick Mighty No. 9 and whatnot, but there are far better games than ever beefore, and there are far more of them.

Name a genre you want to play, and there's 10+ amazing semi-recent games for it.

I'm the opposite.
As I grew older I learned how to keep up with news. I have a direct RSS feed of gaming news on my phone that updates every 5 minutes that I've been tweaking for years.

The frequency in which I buy games has grown exponentially in the last two years.
I feel that the fracture between mainstream and niche titles increased. I love genres like DPRGs, fighting games, raising sims, and rpgs in general. I also like shooters and action games.
On my Vita alone I already surpassed the 150 game mark. My PS4 is approaching 50 games, and my steam account is nearing 100.
The reality of it is I should stop because I've only played less than half of these titles so far, but games I'm interested in keep coming out.
