It isn't. Enemy placement and platforming take a back seat to which the bulk amount of the rooms aren't memorable. Compared to any other platforming or run and gun at the time there were more well crafted levels than the rooms and areas within Super Metriod. Super Metriod puts exploration first before the action elements and the game suffers due to it.

It isn't, due to that it has elements of an action platformer but doesn't pull them off anywhere as good as action platformers and relies on exploration which equates to being a time sink rather than something that is engaging like good combat due to interesting enemies or good level design to actually make your way through.

So the biggest draw to Super Metriod is that it is a time sink. Eventually you can sink more time into the game to try to make the game go by even faster.

You mean areas you just instantly blast through, places you just often jump through quickly, many brain dead types of enemies that often drop from the ceiling and right into the floor or patrol the parameter of a platform and ram into you if you just happen to be in their path? That equates to many dull rooms one after another compared to other platformers, run and guns, and everything in between during the time period. So the biggest aspect of people not being able to progress is that they may not have thoroughly explored an area rather than coming to a tricky situation in which they might have to learn enemy patterns or not have the level design itself be your downfall.

I get that people enjoy it, but to say it is among the best games ever is silly since what is the point of exploration when the new places aren't engaging to play? They may look nice, they may have nice music, but they aren't fun to play around unlike other games.
