Bulletstorm is unironically one of the best 7th gen first person shooters. Fast gameplay, fun weapons with alt fire and the skillshot system was fantastic and I can't believe no one has copied it's XP system. A major problem devs have is making fancy and complicated gameplay but players ignore it in favour of being boring (see: Vanquish). Bulletstorm forced people to try have fun so they could afford new weapons and stuff, and seeing the screen full of points is super satisfying.

I thought Bulletstorm was pretty enjoyable, and the linear levels lended themselves well to a more fast-paced, arcadish style. The weapon variety was fucking great too and even multiplayer turned out surprisingly decent with how team-oriented it was.

Most of the levels had to boil down to seas of chest high concrete walls, mostly because the game forced a health regen system in. I'd enjoy Bulletstorm far more if it just had a health and armor system.

I actually think the next Borderlands should steal ideas from Bulletstorm, XP earning should come from playing well, and you could easily combine the skill trees and buffs of Borderlands with Bulletstorm stuff really well.
