Back in the day that was normal actually. The shared became a thing to save money.
A city in a game needs to be truly immersive, something like Skyrim I have found to have by far the best, most populous cities ever.
What is Star Ocean 5. Also you were lucky if you could enter even two of those buildings.
>People everywhere, apparently unlimited supplies of bandits and guards.
>Total farmland in the realm would be hard pressed to support more than a few people.

Every other building should be locked or should have a security guard/team that immediately pushes your character out the front door.
Because that's how it works in real life. The average city, you can only walk into 5% of the buildings with no risk of being arrested.

Repeating NPCs in city levels make sense too.
City dwellers often only have one of 10 personalities. Being in a city effectively turns you into a clone.

Get ignored. Just like any videogame. Just like any city.

>>381372590
This is realistic.
In real life you do not talk with every person on the street without a reason. And you can only enter your home, workplace, shops and friends' homes.
Having ability to enter every house casually and talk with people living there about their everyday problems is out of place even in fantasy settings.

I think that city should be small so it can be done well. You see, you should be able to go inside every house and talk to everyone. Skyrim is a great game because of this.

Define "back in the day." Because if "back in the day" means, say, middle ages of Europe, you're absolutely wrong. They frequently didn't have separate rooms, let alone separate beds. That means little Archibald got to watch mommy and daddy go at it.

Is there any game that lets you explore a decent-sized city with interactable buildings and a realistic amount of foot/car traffic?
I don't even care if it's fantasy or reality or sci-fi, one example of a city that looks sort of plausible and can actually be called a proper city.
GTA5 is maybe the closest that comes to memory, but even there, most shops & buildings are just empty cardboard cutouts and the traffic is almost non-existent. It's like driving around in a modern-looking Potemkin village.

GTA series, maybe. But you cant enter most mouses, and some things are just decoration.
A true city would require teams of hard working motherfuckers going at it day and night just to simulate a living, breathing city.

Unfortunately, It would only make it tedious to traverse, though. Full-scale cities are interesting when you're there FOR the city -- such as in exploration/survival games. It's awful for any game where you've actually got somewhere to be and something to do.
>>381373356
better than the selection of 3, maybe 4 personalities that exist outside of big cities
>>381378434
That's the point. If you go full city, you need to make it THE game. Not a part of the game. No sane producer would do that.
