Character design first off. Artists usually do a goodjob of communicating what that characters playstyle will be off their design. Then I look at their movesets and see if there's anything I like. Then I look at their bnbs and do the same. Ultimately, I usually pick a passive rushdown character like Guy from SFIV.

He's complete and utter shit in neutral, but the fact is that as long as he gets a single hit on you, it can easily snowball into death, hence why he consistently gets great results. Nu is weak in this version, making him even more prevalent since none of the other zoners can deal with his mobility as well as the rest, also his Clouds got a massive buff where he can basically dumb that shit on you when blocking and instead of getting a set amount, can gain pretty much half Curse without even hitting you.

That's BlazBlue's issue imo, there are distinct levels. You have Taokaka, Bang, Litchi, Tager, Arakune, all those guys who are 'normal', and then you have people like Ragna, Terumi, Hakumen and Nu, who could murk the whole lower cast, and in Hazama's case, does. Only a few people like Jin are outliers to this and it makes it seem really trite and predictable because there is literally only one way Makoto vs.Rachel could ever end. Lower-tier characters just don't get enough play story-wise.
