Is the Gran Turismo series any good?

It was good

GT1-GT4 were basically my childhood. I think I've spent half my free time playing through those games.

Also Forza is better now desu

GT 1&2 where golden for their time
GT 1 had the Hi-Fi unlock mode that gave people a taste of the future of graphics on a system that really shouldn't have been able to do all of that.
GT 2 gave us a ton of game modes ( Rally racing though was highly limited even if it was a lot of fun ) and really cemented on the entire "Working your way up to greatness" having to buy a used car turn that puppy up, win money for better and newer cars till you where in sponsored cars doing the S rank tournaments. The other GT's just never captured that kind of feeling given the farther they went, the less 'rent a cars' where around and focused more on the sports, and the sports-lite cars, more less dropped the entire sim aspect as well.

last good game was 3. after that, the developers focused way too much on making it as realistic as possible and forgot to make the game FUN.
