Yeah play Zero Mission next, then AM2R and then Fusion. Then move onto the Prime games.

There are some phenomenal "romhacks" for Super Metroid (basically mods) that completely change the game.

I recommend trying out this one at some point. It massively expands the map, adds a whole bunch of new items, new physics and just changes up the game massively.

Get those prime games! I love both 2 and 3D and I'm a little jealous i cant play them for the first time again.

Are there any places you can still download it? The developer took it down and a lot of other people removed downloadable copies of it.

Yea I was mistaken, I was looking on a map online trying to see where I was so I could tell you. I'm at the save room by the elevator that leads out of Brinstar, and I've explored Norfair.
>>
>>381345947
What's the difference between that edition and original SM Redesign? By the way, Redesign was great, I loved the sheer size of the map and being able to get lost again. It makes the original SM's map look so small in comparison. Definitely worth a play.
>>
>>381346617
The original Redesign has a lot of little design choices that made it much more of a chore to play through. This is by the same guy many years later ironing out problems with the original, adding lots of little immersion features, improving the physics etc. I'd give it a shot even if you've played through the original because it isn't exactly the same.

Zero Mission, Super Metroid, and Fusion are some of my favorite games of all time, but I can't get into prime. I wish I could, but the gameplay feels so slow and I hate needing to switch beams/visors.

Do 2 or 3 improve on either of those aspects at all? I just got the Ice Beam in Prime
>>
>>381347458
2 and 3 still have visors but they toned down the gameplay reliance on them in combat. Plus the scan visor highlights objects so there is none of the silly scan hunting from the first Prime.
>>
>>381347458
>I hate needing to switch beams/visors.
It takes a flick of the c-stick and like 1 second
>>
Drop ZM after you beat Mother Brain. If you do that, it's pretty good. The tacked on last section is garbage.
>>
>>381347458
2 has even more of that stuff, but there's more combat.
3 has beam stacking and generally more fluid controls, but is much more linear.

I wouldn't call it garbage, but it never did quite feel right. The stealth part was okay, but once you get the suit back and have that "whoa cool I'm strong again" moment, the feeling wears off after you've heard the blaring loud and shortened Brinstar loop for the fourth or fifth time. And with the amount of time it takes to get to the end of the game with just that loop playing throughout all of Chozodia, it really does start to get grating. I love Zero Mission, but that ending sequence keeps it from being better than Super or Fusion, for me.
>>
Metroid is my favourite licence and I haven't played Super Metroid in years so since It's Metroid time... "I should play this game again... why the fuck not ?"

So I played throught the game and I finished it today. I have to say that the game is not as easy as I remembered it... Not like it's hard to deal with the bosses or something. More like it's hard to find where you have to go. I was doing fine until Maridia and the Gravity suit. I had a hard time to figure out where it was and what I was supposed to do. But after Maridia piece of cake.

Great game and I loved to play it again even if I found Maridia annoying as fuck. Metroid Prime now !

Nintendo has stated they want to make sure games on the Switch have a pick up and play factor, so like you could play on the way to work, put it down, and pick up from your lunch break without missing a beat.

I feel like in order for that to happen with Prime 4, they're going to have to seriously make some changes.
>>
>>381348810
You can use the Charge Beam to damage him. Actually, if you have Wave/Ice/Plasma equipped, shooting him with the charge beam does more damage than a super missile.

>>
>>381349248
Draygon is easy though. Shinespark or just grapple beam the electricity when he grabs you
>>
>>381348810

There is a way back. Just before the lava filled room, you can take a right and enter the dark room. At the top of the dark room you can pass through an invisible wall to the left.
>>
>>381349423
Is there an easy way to kill him without doing this? I remember as a kid I didn't know about the electricity so I did it with missiles, and I remember he swoops so fast you only have time to shoot 1 rocket into his stomach. Took me forever to do it and once I figured out the electricity I've never tried to do it without it since.
>>
>>381349557
Shinesparking him is the real quickest way, but other than that just whittle him down I think
>>
>>381348952
People will probably think I'm a moron, but I think that they should go with a proper fps gameplay (2 sticks). If you played DOOM you know that it has a Metroid Feeling, and I loved the game. I want Metroid Prime 4 to be similar to this game, probably not as fast but similar. I'm playing Metroid Prime on the gamecube for the first time in years and yes the game is fun the gameplay works but it's slow and it feels very tanky (a bit like a Resident evil), I like it but at the same time I would be ok with more fluidity and "better controls".

Reminder that you can play Super with superior GBA Style romhack that changes physics and controls to be more like the GBA games and AM2R.

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3211/

There's also another one that implements CD-Quality music.

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2393/

You just need to apply GBA Style one first, then apply the music one to the GBA Style-patched rom.

Webm of both in action, was recording late at night when tired but it should give you a good idea:

The source code is available, but it's stripped off all the assets and Nintendo copyrighted content (Samus renamed to Sarah, Metroids renamed to Monsters and so on) so you'd need to figure out how the code works, adapt it for 3DS and change all the edited text back to real one.

>>381350837

>>
>>381350937
First of all, replacing "beep bloops" is impossible for now, google what MSU-1 chip is. It's a music extension chip, actual hardware chip that can be used on a real SNES. You can use it to implement RedBook music in SNES games as long as you actually get the music.
There's a composer that actually orchestrated entirely of Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger music, from scratch. It's not just the original music with samples changed.
http://syntheticorchestra.com/

Anyway games still need to be manually patched to make use of MSU-1, this is one such patch.
Here's a vid of CT with MSU-1 patch and orchestral music:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7U5hJCcTNI

The goal of making MSU-1 was essentially turning SNES games into PS1-era games in terms of music.

>>381351304
Excellent refutation Anon.

I'll give it a try.
>>
>>381351415
You can easily use the MSU-1 patch standalone without the GBA Style one if ZM/Fusion-like controls and physics aren't your thing too.
Personally I can't ever imagine going back to playing original versions of games without MSU-1 for those that have it.
Afaik atm only Super Metroid, Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, F-Zero, Mega Man X, Secret of Mana and Super Mario World have MSU-1 patches though I only tested LttP, CT and SM ones since I don't care about the other games.
They're currently working on MSU-1 patch for Final Fantasy VI (misnamed as III on SNES in Murrica)
>>
>>381349880

Metroid 2 was extremely limited by GameBoy so I'd still say AM2R devs did the best they could. Though something tells me you never actually heard the remastered OST for AM2R which was planned to be included in the 1.2 update, but later leaked through an anonymous source:

I only ever played the 1.1 version of AM2R. Iff there's a new version with better music, I can't judge that yet.
>>
>>381353647
I'll stick to the originals, thanks. They're an integral part of the game's atmosphere and always did their job exceptionally well. The hammed up "epic" orchestra music replaces the more ambient, subtle style of the originals with an overly-actiony, distracting style that just doesn't fit in the game and entirely changes the atmosphere.
>>
>>381354334
Yeah you clearly didn't listen to it. Choke on a dick I gues since you're definitely a faggot.
>>
>>381354209
My issue with the AM2R soundtrack that it was too upbeat and not atmospheric enough. Metroid games usually strike a good balance between atmospheric and catchy, but AM2R's music fell a bit too much in the latter camp. Since they were presumably trying to replicate the tension and atmosphere of the original game, the music didn't really fit even if it was technically good.
>>
>>381354330
Yeah the compositions got updated and whatnot.
AM2R development is actually still ongoing, though semi-unofficially at AM2R plebbit.
Current build is 1.2.10 and is compatible with that music pack I linked, they don't include it in the patch itself due to massive filesize.
I suggest waiting for next month though as they've got 1.3 update planned, adding the different music phases to Queen, one extra attack (hopefully, it's still work in progress according to dev), Charge Beam damaging Metroids with different base beams having different damage values ala SM and some other stuff.
>>
>>381353168
I think Samus' character might be one of the factors.

A lot has changed since Prime 3 in terms of video game storytelling, and I feel like they will try to give Samus more personality and speaking lines. It won't be as bad as Other M, but it will change the flow enough to make Samus feel like a different person.
>>
>>381353067
>SotN has barely above SNES graphics
I think you need to go back and play SotN, then play a SNES game. They're further apart then you may remember. Way smoother animations and detail.
The PSX's RAM is about half of the size of you largest SNES games in their entirety.

Christ that's fucking godly.

Cheers Anon.

Why would they even lower the quality from this?
>>
>>381355339
Because they released the OST as MP3 and MP3 only goes up to 320 bitrate. This thing is substantially higher quality.
Also word on the street is that Doc himself released this anonymously since the guy was literally approached out of the blue by an anonymous guy on Twatter who just gave him these files, completely adapted for game with perfect loop points and everything. So it's not just taking the released OST and renaming shit to fit the game.
>>
>>381355331
>shit physics in the GBA games
The physics function perfectly fine and allow for tight, fast-paced platforming. The GBA games play incredibly smoothly thanks to the physics and the level design, which takes advantage of those physics. That isn't to say that they're better than Super's, though. They all feel good to play, they're just different. Personally I prefer Super's physics that allow for more creative movement, but I absolutely wouldn't call the physics in the GBA games shitty.
>>
>>381356007
>>381355331
You two are all right.
>>
>>381356007
Far enough.
I far prefer the physics in SM and what it allows you to do control wise, but I do reconise that the GBA games do a very good job of designing the world around the physics that work on a small resolution.
I guess I just wish that the SM physics model was used for more then just SM.

I have no idea. They have a placeholder page up for it https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071K9NFC8 but I'm pretty sure that image is from the Treehouse stream, and if they were going to sell it, they'd likely put it up for preorder by now unless this is a weird amiibo situation where they have such little stock they need to figure out a way to release it in a visible time frame.

>>381357825
Yeah, but US doesn't have the amiibos bundled in. That seems a bit pricey too at close to $100.

>>381358031
That would be weird if they had such little stock because I think Metroid isn't enough popular to make a Special Edition sell out so quickly like the amiibos

Super Metroid wasn't designed for Project Base's physics and the game is kinda ruined because of it. It's nice as an alternate way to experience the game, but saying it's superior is just plain wrong.
Project Base with the map patch, however, has many changes to the map to greatly expand it while keeping the new physics in mind, and doesn't ruin the game.
And then you've got Hyper Metroid, which is designed from the ground up with Project Base in mind and is fucking phenomenal because of it.

You're that same motherfucker who suggested that patch to the guy in /vr/ for his first run through the game, aren't you? Fuck you.

They never bothered me much in the Prime games, maybe because of the format. But I'm not sure how it'll work in the 2D games. Do the Metroid II challenge.
Basically, you're not allowed to use or collect any of the new items, and you can only collect five energy tanks, and you can't stack beams.
You have to collect Super Missiles and Speed Booster in order to progress, but you are only allowed to use them in the spots they're required for.

In order to get it you would need to hack your 3DS, and get the app as an installable package, aka a CIA, and install it.

Hunters was garbage. The controls were terrible and the campaign was just the tiny multiplayer maps linked together.
>>
>>381354896
I don't think giving Samus more personality and speaking lines would necessarily be a bad thing. Sure Other M did that and failed terribly. But just because Other M failed doesn't mean that any attempt to give Samus more personality and a voice would automatically bad. I'd say there is a right way of doing it. Though finding that right way could admittedly be challenging for the developers. They would have find a way to give voice and more personality to Samus in a way that satisfies at least the majority of fans and fits in with their interpretation of Samus' character.

Redesign is really popular but whenever I look at the map or watch videos it just looks like a huge maze to me

I've played a good bit of Metroid 1 and mazes are actually not a bad thing, but the difference with Metroid 1 is you only need to find two bosses and a few powerups to complete the game, it's also really small. Whereas with super and presumably redesign you need most powerups to complete the game. Is it annoying to run around this maps for hours? The rooms like featureless, is it hard to remember them?

Redesign is kind of crap. You can remember the maps but you spend a lot of time aimlessly wandering, hoping to find the next spot to continue.

I hope so. I don't want it to be exactly like the old Prime games 100% but it should have the same structure and atmosphere. I just want the gameplay to evolve so it can be faster and speedier, like the 2D games. I want that and some new items and abilities, if not also reworked versions of old items, like the Screw Attack. And give me the Speed Booster but in 3D now too. And I'll be happy.

>>381371773
Early versions of most of the items exist, though I don't remember finding any of the suits. The beam combos exist, IIRC Sunburst and Darkburst were more or less finished, but Sonic Boom had no visual effect at all when firing, and made a regular power beam shot sound. It did still do a ton of damage, however. You could also activate some of the multiplayer-only items, like deathball and invisibility (although with memory editing you can also do this in regular Prime 2). So it had a lot of the items. Something I never explored though was the map. There are some videos on youtube of unused rooms on the Demo Disc, but they're hard to get to.

At the end of the video, the map on the upper right kinda look like a space pirate running with a a tube.

Only if it were over-the-shoulder or at least the shooter was over-the-shoulder, with a freer camera outside of that, like how Uncharted, nuTomb Raider, and a few other games do it.

Also depends on who were making it. I think Retro could still do a good job, even if they hadn't touched a Metroid game since Prime 3 or they could get someone like PlatinumGames to do it.

Personally, I think it was a subtle way of him saying he gets that the fans weren't partial to his depiction of Samus in Other M, since that picture of Samus is associated with that one magazine page, which pretty strongly contradicts how she was designed in Other M. Basically, I think he got the message and wants to show that he can return to form and please the fanbase.

I hope that's it, anyway.
>>
>>381373819
>Only if it were over-the-shoulder
I disagree. I think a good control scheme would be to keep the camera on fixed pathway like it was in Other M (never had any issue figuring out what was going on), but use motion control to control the aiming reticule on screen, similar to Splatoon or the boomerang/arrow aiming in Wind Waker HD.

Samus will always shoot where the reticule is and you have to aim at enemy while shooting.

Doesn't really bother me in the least since the only time I ever die in Metroid games is on bosses. I know people like to overreact about modern additions like that but I'm sure there's going to be a hard mode to satisfy that crowd. If it makes Metroid more accessible to the masses and gets more people interested then I'm all for it. Most people I know have only played a little bit of Prime and mostly know Samus from Smash so the more exposure the better.

Metroid sound in action is dog shit

The only good thing about it is that random NOA guy speaking THE LAST METROID IS IN CAPTIVITY with crystal clear audio

Kenji Yamamoto did the soundtracks for the prime games, and he knows what his music sounds like in high fidelity. It's not orchestral and orchestral instruments are a meme. He's not like most video game composers that have a different feel for better or worse when going from retro to modern sound design.

Example:

In Echoes, your hitbox in the screw attack animation is morph ball sized, so you can screw attack into morph ball tubes. This lets you reach a point from which you can jump to this portal that you're never meant to be able to reach. Not surprisingly, it doesn't do anything.

I played the GBA-style hack the other day and I had a lot of fun. The new jumping didn't give me any major trouble despite the rooms not being designed for it. Although samus shoots up way too fast and short hops are a problem.

What pisses me off about the mod is the spin jump sound is missing and they changed the foot step sound. Were these project base changes that the modder accidentally left in?

SA-X is such an amazing concept for metroid with a lot of unused potential. I hope we have something like that in future metroid games, some other other bounty hunter or an extremely powerful space pirate.

The best shit would be to design something like 20 encounters, and only use a handful at random on your playthrough. That way you never know when this thing is going to show up.

There's nothing wrong with the Zero Suit in theory. It makes more sense for her to wear a tactical, form-fitting suit underneath her armor as opposed to a belly shirt and panties. I'm not against the idea of a catsuit for samus. It's just the design is so boring. It's shape is featureless, like it's a zentai suit or some shit. And the pattern on it just isn't very interesting. They even made the it worse for Other M. Because it used to be two textures and now we have one, blue and dark blue.

If it was something adequately designed by someone who was trying, like the evangelion suits, I would probably like it.

I think it's funny (and also pretty sad) that literally the only reason Zero Suit Samus is in Smash Bros. was because Sakurai was desperate for a new Metroid rep.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2006/05/31/sakurais-smash-bros-update

>I put Zero Suit Samus in thinking I wanted to include more characters from the popular Metroid series.

He felt bad that Metroid had only one character in Smash prior to Brawl, but at the same time, he firmly believed and still believes) that Ridley can't work as a playable character, so he just utilized the Zero Suit and called it a day.

I don't believe there are any rocks that are destroyed specifically by normal missiles.

There are ones that are destroyed by bombs, super missiles, speed booster, and power bombs, as well as ones destroyed by everything that you can just shoot with your regular beam.
Until you get the x-ray visor, use regular bombs on suspicious spots to reveal if they break/what breaks them

Super Metroid hacking is fucked.
There's no standard like Super Mario World. Hacks will require either a headered rom or an unheadered rom and most of the time the author does not state which. Hacks are usually built for the NA version, so try headered and unheadered versions of that.

It was definitely the sort of thing that'd be difficult to implement in a first person game. I don't know why people don't criticize it, but I guess that just speaks to how well Retro was able to make it work. It doesn't break the flow too badly for moving the camera out of first person, in my opinion, so I'm pretty impressed at how well they incorporated it, to be honest.

>It doesn't break the flow too badly for moving the camera out of first person

Yeah it could be a lot worse, but I'm really sensitive to that kind of thing. The ledge grab powerup in Prime 3 made me mad as fuck. Not only was it pointless because it could literally be replaced by any other area unlock system, but it took you out of first person to climb a ledge and waste your time.

To me the morphball sets the example how how camera switching should work. You're not briefly going in and out of morphball to accomplish something trivial. Even a long transition for the morphball is escuseable because when you do use it, you're going to stay in it for extended sections.

It's bullshit because anonymous image board, but I can see how actual footage of the game gives the impression that it's closer to being finished than it actually is, and consumers get annoyed with how long they are waiting.

When all they have is a logo I know that it's no where close to time to anticipate anything yet. They probably wouldn't have shown anything but Nintendo has seemed to figure out that you can't announce a 2D or 3D metroid without the other or the other half the the fanbase will sperg out.
>>
>>381387301
Yeah, the ledge grabs from Prime 3 were stupid, I agree. The transition for using the screw attack though isn't that bad, since you can still continue moving when you land as the camera moves back into first person. Also, it has more utility than just getting across a few wide gaps. It can gain a little extra height, and does a lot of damage if you headbutt enemies with it, just like the 2D games. It's also great for sequence breaking. So I wouldn't compare it to the ledge grabs from Prime 3.
>>
>>381387652
>I hear a lot more condemnation of zero mission's extra section than praise here. In fact you are the first one.
Really? Huh.
Well, if I could just elaborate a bit, in my mind I don't relate Zero Suit to Other M or shit, in my mind, ever since the game came out, it was more of an "Updated Justin Bailey".

I like the postgame, as I also enjoy Metal Gear quite a lot (in fact, at the time my only 2 GameBoy games were Ghost Babel and Zero Mission), I thought it was neat but I will agree they could've done it much better and more more with it. Maybe if the gun packed more punch?

Also, I was dissapointed there wasn't a New Game Plus using the Zero Suit in refference to Justin Bailey.

I associate it with the fapbait japanese commercial for zero mission until samus opens her mouth

And I don't hate the final section for being a stealth section, It's just not very fun and it's so different and separated from the rest of the game that I just don't feel like playing it after mother brain. Also mecha ridley isn't a boss fight worth toughing it out for, and 100%ers hate backtracking through the whole map after getting the fully powered suit.

SA-X in fusion was so much better even though they aren't really stealth sections so much as escape sections. Not only because its exciting, but it's integrated in the game really well and sprinkled throughout instead of being tacked on as one big glob. And if you could sneak past SA-X most of the time that would make something already great that much more interesting.

You do realize a modded 3DS can accept any other bluetooth controller as input, right? Head at /hbg/ to ask for more.

I am still mad at Nintendo Power for spoiling that there was a section without the power suit before the game came out. I was so pumped when Game Informer mentioned "a new gameplay section that left our jaws on the floor that we won't spoil" and then not long after the next Nintendo Power issue spoiled it.
>>
>>381390308
Yes, but it's through a PC, which gives me input lag concerns.

Probably. She's very attractive but that could backfire on her meaning that she would never be with anyone because people would be too intimidated to ask her out. She was also raised by bird people so she's probably expecting a courting dance from someone and would be oblivious to regular human flirting.

Is anyone else still in awe over the 3DS/n3DS woes for the major lack of the Zero Mission and Fusion 3DS Virtual Console ports? ;_;

And, yet, Wii U niggers got the ports....

Why is NintenShit so selfless and cold blooded? ;____;

I wouldn't even say Nintendo gives a shit about Adam. Only Sakamoto does. And Sakamoto doesn't represent all of Nintendo.

How the fuck do they expect you to fight mother brain in Zero Mission when there's projectiles just constantly knocking you off balance?
>>
>>381392954
git gud
>>
Guys, what if they remade Zero Mission as an eShop title featuring an artstyle like the one anon posted here >>381364786 ? Would you play it?

You could unlock the real Zero Mission and the original 8-bit Metroid by finding them as items in new rooms
>>
>>381392954
Shoot down the projectiles. Doesn't the Screw Attack negate the projectiles too? I will admit it's pretty hard, though.
>>
If I was going to emulate the prime games would I want to download the trilogy or GC games separately? Is there any graphical or gameplay difference between them? I'm guessing i would want to use dolphin regardless.
>>
>>381393118

Trilogy has wide-screen support and pointer controls. That's about the only difference
>>
>>381393330

What if it wasn't Sakamoto's team?
What if it was the Splatoon team doing it as an experiment on programming Metroidvanias as well as a funny parody of Metroid to fans of the proper franchise? Think like the Super Metroid 4koma that came bundled with Super Metroid in Japan
>>
>>381393480
Sadly, no. Pointer only, but it feels pretty natural imo. Prime on GC has tank controls but it was never an issue due to the game's design.

Hey just wanted to say that I'm really liking these Metroid threads. These threads along with the groovy Ataribox threads are major reasons for me coming to /v/ lately.

I'll admit that before the E3 announcements I wasn't really into Metroid. It's not that I thought the series was bad or anything. I just never really motivated to dive in. However the annoucements and the hype that came from made me interested and now I'm starting to get into the series, starting with Super Metroid (which I've been playing for a few hours). I also want to try to play the Prime games at some point. Anyway most of you people seem pretty cool. Sure there's a few assholes every now and then but hey isn't that just 4chan?
>>
>>381393584
>but hey isn't that just 4chan?
It's more /v/ than anything. /v/ is one of the worst places you could ever come to to discuss video games.
>>
>>381393118
That'd be funny because Zero Mission was originally going to have a chibi-look based on the sprites from the original game.

Probably, the whole Adam deal seems more like a one-sided crush than anything that ever escalated. Before that she lived with bird people that were -probably- incompatible with humans.

Unless the reason why she stops in bars in post-credit art is to get laid by randoms, which seems like it would be out of character.
>>
>>381393962
Nah. It was stated in an interview that the art team was told simply to "make it like the original" and when they came back with that they got their tables flipped.
