Third person turf war shooter.

Instead of killing the other team the goal is to cover the map in your team's ink (while shooting the other team if they get in your way).

Also you can turn into a squid and swim through your team's ink to get across the map quickly.

Tons of weapons, gear, clothing customization options. The first one was a blast.

It's a TPS where the idea of map control gets pushed all the way to the forefront with the ink-swimming mechanic.
The way that you traverse the environment is always changing as you and your opponents' ink cover each other, creating a dynamically-changing battlefield, forcing you to adapt on the fly.
The ranked modes are limited, to be sure, only having 3: Zone control, CTF and Payload, but the underlying mechanics make them feel unlike any other shooter.
The weapon load-outs are static. Each weapon comes with a specific Sub and specific Super, but there are tons of different weapons of varying classes such as standard shooters, snipers, paint rollers, buckets, paint brushes, rifles, Gatling guns, etc. You're bound to find a weapon that suits your playstyle.
Finally, different articles of clothing will have different buffs such as damage boosting, run speed, swim speed, etc. Different clothing pieces will have different "Brands" that have a different likelihood of rolling certain buffs when you upgrade your gear, so there is a bit of RNG, but if you're smart you can get the gear you want without much trouble.

In Splatoon 1 you can change your inkling's outfit as well as skin color, gender, and eye color. In Splatoon 2 you can do all of that and now you can change hairstyle too for the first time.

Nah you can play sitting down, it's kind of like tilting a steering wheel to drive.
It's mostly useful for looking up/down, but that may have just been because of the Wii U gamepads shape. I mostly use the gyro for up/down and quick snaps left or right with the snipers.

The motion control aspect is to be used along side the right stick. This way you're offered some pretty great camera control, on-par with a mouse.

Use right analog stick to turn camera left/right, just motion controls to aim up and down. Also use motion controls to aim side to side when aiming for finer adjustments like tracking someone when youre shooting.

I was really surprised how intuitive it became after an hour or so of getting used to it. You mostly just have to move your wrists, not your whole arm like people think
