It's a disappointment, to be sure. But I wouldn't turn my nose up at a follow-up, especially now that Inafune's fetching Hino's coffee at L5. Tweak or remove the absorption mechanic, take out the cheap parts of the level design (everything in Pyro's level, for a start), dump Ray entirely and give Call back her originally-intended personality and I'd give it a shot. X8 was a pleasant bounceback from X7, so it's not as though redemption is impossible.
