It is a sequel in the sense that it takes place later but it's pretty standalone trilogy. You will miss some nuances and lore i guess but nothing that will confuse you (also it seems that they will have a summary of the older games or something).

The original quadrilogy wouldn't do with a simple remaster, like they're doing now, the gameplay has aged like milk ( i do hope that this is successful enough to make them consider a remake of the older ones though).

Better in some regards. Characters are more fleshed out, and gameplay is significantly better. Setting and stuff is developed more in IMOQ than in G.U, much of the rest comes down to taste.

The story in IMOQ is really not all that great, I wouldn't put it above G.U even. The enviroments and designs are amazing and do a great job at setting the mood, but the story is run-of-the-mill.
