Looks like 3ds gets a mode similar to that mario minions thing where you send a group of monsters into a pit to look for treasure and shit. There was also some weird dq1 reference in the form of visiting a town complete with it's old graphics no one is talking about.

The series holds itself back just a bit.
It needs to be an open world game in the Dragon Quest sense.
Where you're taking the best gameplay elements of III and VIII but push a really solid story that's threaded through the vignettes, every single one adds to the overall plot.

That's how the series would break in big to the west, by having an undeniable charm mixed with the older concepts of progression from the NES JRPG days.

Just the simple exercise of buying herbs and torches pre-emptively to search a cave, that little element alone adds so much to the game.
XI needs to expand on that.
