The problem with Ubisoft is that you have way too many towers, a single island in Black Flag could have three or more towers which is completely insane. Each tower is the exact same to climb and serves for limited utility.

In BotW you have few towers and they reveal great chunks of the map. They all have a different gimmick you need to overcome. They have some added utilities like you being able to use your binoculars to spot objectives or being able to glide off to said objectives, which is nice since they fit really neatly with the game's mechanics.

The Divine Beasts are the best thing to happen to dungeons. Their coherent design inside and out is god tier. Plus if you add up all the puzzles, chests, and enemies you fight in shrines combined with the four divine beasts you easily have 10-12 dungeons worth of content, just spread out.

Some people like to feel like they can explore. They like to see the world and how it's interconnected, they like to feel like they are discovering the world on their own. It's also (sometimes, in the rare cases where it is handled well) more immersive: first by providing a world with more belivable dimensions (places look like real places, not like an artificially restrained room or a fucking theme park ride). Third: open world often opens a lot of opportunities for emergent scenarios, which are fun because A) again player is being an actual agent, rather than a mere passive observer, and B) they can be unique, which is satisfying on it's own.

The real problem with open world games is not the concept of an open world, but the fact that most open-world games utterly fail to take advantage of it.
I don't know about Breath of Wild - I have not played it - but most open-world games are just actually using the world very poorly.

Not only that but the content tends to be watered down to fill the space it has to on top of it. You walk more and do less and the shit you do is never as in depth as a game that takes care to craft more curated scenarios.

Good example is taking MGSV:GZ and MGSV:TPP. Ground Zeroes is the best fortress between the two games by far.

Similarly, BotW would only benefit by taking its core mechanics (the physics based shit is fantastic) and focusing it into 8 or 12 dungeons designed to test the player's problem solving, exploratory, and technical mastery of the game.

BOTW is the resurgence of Zelda's influence. I agree they had nothing influential for the past 18 years, but BOTW very clearly breaks that trend. The retards are the ones who don't realize how well crafted the world is, how coherent the physics are, how non-existent the hand-holding is. Like OOT, other devs will be playing catch up for the next 10+ years.

BOTW is by no means the first game to do what it did (neither was OOT), but it's the first game to do everything so right. For example at this year's E3 alone there were no fewer than three games which showed off slow-mo aerial arrow. BOTW may not have invented this, but it certainly is making it very influential.

The same applies to extremely steep mountains, large canyons devoid of life and oceans of any kind. Unless they implement suitable realism, these areas are boring empty spaces with nothing to offer. And they're never implemented with suitable realism, you'll never have big waves or a crazy wildlife under the ocean that you are free to explore, you'll never have dynamic avalanches on mountains. And that's what makes these areas so boring compared to the real world.
