I loved Ys games and especially the OST up to Ys IV.
But after Ys V I just don't know what the fuck happened with the series, played III remake and it's so awful, it's like they took every bad aspects of the series and made a remake based on it while making the OST worse.

BASED NISA.
>>
>>381316234
Maybe one day this series will be called out for what it is. An action game with RPG elements. Instead of being branded a real JRPG.
>>
>>381318279
Ys is an action JRPG. Stuff like 2D Zelda are just action games with RPG elements.
>>
>>381318279
>>381318386
JRPG means Japanese RPG, it doesn't have to have turn based combat, since JRPG only refers to where the game was made (in Japan)
>>
>>381318279
Not once in its entire existence has Ys been branded as a JRPG. It's always been an Action RPG.
>>
>>381318174
Like it should. Ys was always a PC series.
>>
>>381318660
Sure but the console versions were better
>>
>>381320723
Hardly. Voice acting aside Eternal shits all over any console version of I & II.
>b-but muh redbook audio
You can mod it in and it takes a total of 5 minutes to do so.

Wanderers was utter shit, Felghana fixed everything wrong with it.
>b-but muh redbook audio
You can mod it in and it takes a total of 5 minutes to do so.

Also PC Felghana > PSP Felghana (looks awful, voice acting is questionable, the voice acting as well as all the soundtracks can be modded into the PC version, the difficulty got fucked over and it feels far less responsive at 30FPS than it does at 60)

PC Ark > PS2 Ark (3d models look uglier than the sprites, 30fps, shit voice acting, Alma's trials sucked) > shit > PSP Ark (top lel)

I'll give you Dawn because its the best piece of fanfiction I've ever sat through, though. It's better than both Celceta and Mask combined.

It's just your opinion my friend, OST version depends on your preference, I like X6800 versions the best.
Plus what you mentioned here were PC exclusives, those were ported to PS2 and PSP and added few things to keep things fresh.
What I'm talking about is that back then when PC-88 versions were released, they made ports after ports improving those games like X6800, PC-Engine, Saturn versions.
Ys III was good on MD and X6800 and had great soundtrack too.

>>
>>381322436
In that sense I agree with you. The old console ports were better than the PC-88 originals (though I still disagree on Wanderers being good aside from the soundtrack). However all of them have been remade on PC and those versions of the games are the definitive ones.

I played Ys Origins as my first Ys game, and after a 30 minute unskippable cutscene I was dropped into a generic hack and slash with only like 3 different attacks and boring blocky level design.

The music was cool but the game just felt boring and simplistic, kind of like Dynasty Warriors. I didn't feel the need to continue playing with how boring the beginning was.
>>
>>381316234
I've only played felghana, how should I play the rest of the series (what order)? I want to experience extreme bump combat.
>>
>>381325728
Careful you don't summon the origin defence force I hate Origin as well, but for other reasons.
>>381325790
Aside from I & II which are essentially two halves of the same game, order doesn't matter. If you want extreme bump combat play any version of I & II (aside from the DS one), Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys. Maks is pretty average, though.
>>
>>381325728
It's better to start off with the first two, they set up the series very nicely.

Mein ningen

Frankly, the Ys fanbase took a serious nose dive when it got released on Steam. I'm glad it's getting popular in the west, I've been a fan for a long time and it's disheartening to see these Felghanababbies cry that every game isn't Felghana and keep complaining about Falcom exiting the PC market even though that was nearly a decade ago.
>>
>>381328437
I'm sorry I don't like pointless crafting and bloated HP pools
>>
>>381328594
Tell me about it. You can barely get a good Ys discussion these days without the Steambabbies storming in to shit everything up. That's why I barely bother to discuss it with people anymore outside of private chat.

Guess I'm making an exception today since its the 30th anniversary and all that.

>>381329382
You can't just translate literally.
You have to translate the feeling that the name brings across and Merciless Shivering Vase works well for that.
>>
>>381329612
It's a good game and also happens to be the very first Ys game that most people today have played. They get caught up in their personal nostalgia and complain that every game besides Origin isn't exactly like Felghana.
>>
>>381329815
Oh ok, that makes sense. So it's like how Gundam Wing and SEED were in the mid to late 2000s? In terms of the fanbase, not the quality of course.
>>
>>381329612
Nothing. The game is absolutely amazing (it's my personal second favorite), but the moment it hit Steam it completely ruined the fanbase like >>381329815 said.
>>
>>381329612
Similar to how RE4 affects RE discussions, it's often called the best one but plays completely different to the first ones.
Sometimes you just want to talk about the first ones but Oath in Felghana is gonna get brought up sooner or aater.

>playing a series out of release order

You being a pleb aside, Ys is about taking very simple combat mechanics and pushing them to the absolute limit. The heart of the gameplay is in boss fights, which allow almost no room for error on nightmare difficulty. It's like the Tetris of action games, without a single superfluous mechanic. Every mechanic must be mastered if you want to survive.

It's best to start with the first game. Play through it on normal to get accustomed to it's unique combat mechanic and then play it again on nightmare. Then play the rest of the series in release order on nightmare.

When will falcom make good games again?
>>
>>381331778
That didn't even bother me that much.
My gripe with Origin is:
They make a prequel to two of my all time favorite games. They should have made it so you revisit locations from the original games with new and improved visuals and generally have an adventure (which is what Ys is about). Instead I got told to climb the same shitty ass tower 3 times in a row (I first played the nip version), do almost the exact same shit and fight 80% identical bosses with 2 Adol reskins and one character who was actually unique, just so I can fight an extra boss who wasn't even as fun as his 2001 counterpart.

Fuck Origin and fuck the people who think it's the best Ys ever.
>>
>>381332535
It's still better than anything that came after. Falcom went downhill after they moved to consoles. Ys: Party AI members, crappy mechanics, shitton of crap and useless dialogue, cutscenes, grinding, quests, difficulty = HP sponge Kiseki: Generic school anime with the worst characters ever, broken battle system Xanadu: Press x to win persona clone (on any difficulty)
>>
>>381332821
Seven was great, Nayuta was great, Celceta was decent, Cold Steel was great and VIII is the best Ys game I've played in years.

Go back to steam and stay there.
>>
I'm new to this series and just beat Ys 1 a couple of days ago. Playing through Ys 2 right now. I just got to the town in the middle of the lava area. I'm really enjoying it so far. The bump combat is questionable but it's serviceable enough. What really keeps me playing is the tone, story, and characters. I'm actually vey impressed with how much personality they managed to give all the characters, especially with so little dialogue.

I actually find myself caring about helping the villagers when they need something. Right now that girl who helped me at the beginning of the game has been kidnapped and I'm actually motivated to save her. The way the villagers keep changing dialogue to discuss what is currently happening goes a very long way towards making Ys feel like a real place.

Over all I'm very impressed and a big fan of these two games. I can only hope that as they improve on the combat the series will get even better.

I have a vita and a pc, I was planning on just playing them all on vita, are the pc ports actually superior or is the vita fine?

>>381333065
Seven was passable, but start of downhill due to party members. Celceta was absolutely crap, and VIII is the same shit.

Fuck Nisa apologists. Translating Japanese is not hard. It's not an alien language and people have been translating it into various Western tongues for 500 years. It's not some secret art form.
