i have a few questions
when did this genre start, and why did it become so popular? also, why is /v/ so torn on it? and what could be done to make it better? also, what are titles to look forward to?
let's see how this thread goes
>Why'd it start?
It more accurately emulates real roleplaying and theoretically provides more player agency
>Why's it popular?
Good marketers
>Why /v/ hates it?
/v/ hates everything, they just want to fit in.
>How to improve?
Smaller maps denser maps. Less recycled content.
>Upcoming titles
None
It's just a natural progression in video games. Like the difference in linearity between gb zelda, super mario, crash bandacoot, ratchet and clank, GTA and oblivion
The "story" always requires you to follow a set path but the open world-ness eliminates just how linear the game has to be.

>when did this genre start,
No idea. Elder Scrolls Arena?
> why did it become so popular?
Muh freedom.
People can immerse themselves into the world of the game easier
> also, why is /v/ so torn on it?
/v/ has no opinion most of the time. They'll say whatever gives the most (You)'s
> and what could be done to make it better?
That's subjective, anon.
> what are titles to look forward to?
Expect nothing.
Those 3 games don't have that much in common, imo.
Skyrim is like a big box of toys, the one you had as a kid. You can do whatever you want from the get go.
Yes, there is a story and lore behind it, but you probably don't give a shit. You just smash one toy against the other and make fighting sounds.
The Witcher is like a movie/TV show/Book. You live Geralt's life and is tiring going through all it, but at the end, it was a great journey and you end up feeling empty and wanting more to experience.
Inquisition is like a bad session of DND, in which the DM doesn't give a shit and all your friends are playing for the first time.
Its pretty much always been around. The pinical of gaming would be to make a pen and paper Rpg in a game.
/v/ is torn for two reasons. One these games lack contend due to thier size. The second maybe people on /v/ dont want to think when they vidya the just want to push the buttons they are told to.
The other anon is right denser and more rewarding content. Smaller maps? No
Kingdom come divergence is the onlything that come to mind.

skyrim was better than DA:I (a complete smelly shite), but don't you dare put those 2 in the same picture as Witcher

>Game designed to waste time instead of provide challenge
That about summarizes it.
All three of those games have abysmal gameplay while having good presentation (not counting inquisition) There are mobile games out there with better gameplay and the dialogue/writing is bad in all three.
>B-but Witcher 3 had good writing, muh Bloody Baron!
Fuck off, his entire quest line hinges on the fact that his men are too retarded to do a simple search of the area and some of the most contrived bullshit ever conceived (gibberkin is bullshit and you know it)
Every RPG is "open-world" in some way shape or form. Level based games can't be RPG's.

>It's tiring to go through it
>You want more
Cuck.

>Implying Witcher 3 is magically better somehow (it's the tits isn't it? Yea, it's the tits, that's your dick talking)
i don't see what everyones problem with inquisition is. It's nothing amazing but apart from how horribly buggy it is, it's actually pretty decent and easy to get into.

For the first playthrough maybe. Afterwards you start to realize how dialogue doesn't matter except companion approval and how tedious it gets to finish all those fetch quests across those huge maps.
