The FFVII remake is going to have braindead ARPG combat and linear hallways that lead directly to cutscenes. It will be far more 'normie' friendly.

Clearly not since many people had trouble with it. I still remember kids back in the day complaining about the snake boss in the swamp or the two headed dragon. Obviously an RPG veteran can recognize what is going on. But for many people, this was their first RPG.

No, because it was the most marketed one. Realize that FFVII had more money spent on marketing than any FF game since. Even more than FFX, XIII and XV. It got 100 million dollars. And that would be more like $150 million if you consider inflation. Final Fantasy XIII, which was blasted on every billboard and magazine in both Japan and America, only got $65 million in advertising.

Nah. There's barely any "roles". You don't really develop your characters' skills to specific directions to tailor their playstyles. All characters have their set attributes that specialize them in something but it doesn't bar them from doing anything else.

FF7 is a good game, but it's barely an RPG when you think about it.

Not for me. I really enjoyed FF7, but over the years I've acknowledged more of its flaws and why I've had trouble replaying it all the way

Although the scale of FF7 is still pretty epic compared to a lot of the other PS1 RPGs, I think BoF3, or Suikoden 2, or Star Ocean 2, honestly present more memorable and stylish packages.

You also had Wild Arms, Grandia, Xenogears, and the really good Lunar remakes. All a bit rougher around the edges, but really hard to walk away from once they pulled you in. I'm not sure FF7 really had me at the edge of my seat as much after the initial escape from Midgar.

No video based RPG has true role playing. Even the ones based on D&D. You always have set story and set attributes. Some games just give you the ability to change the attributes or class. But really, that's still not even role playing.

This is not to defend Final Fantasy games. They are way too focused on story and lack even basic RPG mechanics. I'm just pointing out that its stupid to bash certain video games for not being 'true role playing' when none of them can be.

It's okay at best and horribly overrated. The thing that bothers me most about VII, is that a vast majority of its loudest fans are the same people that would hand me their memory cards and ask me to beat the game for them because they got bored after leaving Midgar.

Also despite what years of backlash have caused, it easily surpasses VI and VIII, only IX can give it a run for its money but for different reasons depending on what you are looking for.

Even before the second disc I thought it was very underwhelming after all the great things I heard about it. The battle system was great, which made it even more frustrating since the game has an even more unbalanced cutscene/gameplay ratio than fucking MGS4. Prolly VI. VII certainly 'easily surpass' it or VIII. Almost all the Final Fantasy games are of similar quality around V-X which means the best one is just decided by preference. Suggesting VII is miles above everything else is straight up wrong.

Yes but I don't think you're reading what I am saying. The claim was that FF was more "normie" than Skyrim and COD combined despite only selling a sixth of the copies of those two games and now you're changing it so that is normie only within the context of JRPGs, of which it is very much in 2nd place to Pokemon. The most successful FF ever doesn't even make it into the top 50 biggest selling video games of all time. Pokemon must have a dozen make the list.

I understand a lot of it is subjective, but VII had the best open ended plot/storytelling, several really great in depth characters that people including the developers misread the characters, an amazing soundtrack that rivals or is better then any, the best combat of the series and a bunch of other stuff I can reference too. Usually FF hits most of these points but FFVII hits like every bar.

It's biggest take away are usually what you hear like "Bad translation" even though literally there are just like two errors near the beginning of the game which then are replaced with totally smooth dialogue and PLOT HOLES which there are none unless you reference work outside of VII's initial release. I have no problem criticizing the game but people often criticize it for the wrong reasons.
