My favorite Ninja Gaiden game is Razor Edge. I've gotten a lot of hate for it in the past, apparently you have to like Ninja Gaiden Black only or you're not a real Ninja Gaiden fan or something.

Momiji is my favorite Tecmo character and I love playing through Razor's Edge as her. There was one point where I stop using the other characters for months just to focus on learning her kit and such.

I've given hope on NG2 backwards compatibility on Xbone now. It's clear tecmo koei will never ever adknowledge the existence of ngb and ng2 just because they're bitter about oatmeal cookie. Black is rebalanced throughout, mostly enemy placement, if I recall. It's mostly harder, though an easy mode is put in. There are a few parts where those explosion shuriken ninjas are replaced with the cat girls, which I find a lot easier to kill. I forget if the challenge area is unique to Black or not. If you have the chance to play through it, go with Black. There is just a few more bits of content here and there, but it's an overall superior experience.

I got to play Ayane once and I got to the Dinosaur fight before even my buddy who was with me told me to just put in Black because they could tell I was disappointed with the game. I like it too. I like NGB and NG2 more but NG3RE is fun, its strongest point imo is the massive mission mode and the girls now are really fun to play (I didn't care for their playstyle that much in Sigma 2).

I initially hated the combat compared to the previous games but the more I played it the more I learned its finer points and to not think of it as "Ninja Gaiden gameplay, part 3" but rather as something new with completely different combat flow.

The only thing that kinda bugs me is how useless light attacks are. Any random enemy can generally block them so it's good to move into heavies in a combo ASAP making elaborate combos that consist of just light attacks pointless.

I want to be in the timeline where Itagaki didn't leave Tecmo and decided to just focus on Ninja Gaiden.

His whole philosophy is "master one genre and then move on to the next" according to his interviews and he was done with Ninja Gaiden after 2. He said as much, he thought he had perfected hack and slash action games.

It's kinda sad considering he's basically right, NGB and NG2 haven't been surpassed though DMC and Bayo franchises come close but are more freeform stylish combo simulators than life or death surgically precise action. He's wasting his talent not making more games like that considering I don't think Dead or Alive was ever above "it's alright" and Devil's Third is just a total mess.

I beat NG2 for the 360 around 8 years ago, haven't played any of the games since then. I own Sigma 1 and 2, but I haven't got around to playing them. I played through some of Sigma 1 up to around Rachel and stopped, thinking of picking it back up again though.
