I've never played any of these games before and I'm not that big of a fan of mainline FF either, but I'd go with either Cloud or Lightning, because from what I've seen, they seem the most fun to play. Tifa seems kinda cool too.

I dunno why you'd expect that with all the limit breaks and cutscenes, but you can still play fairly grounded and it's been getting more balanced each game. The new one in particular has more ground focus with the dodge changes, but everyone is playing it the same way for some stupid reason and going into the air needlessly.

It's usually one of the more useful things but it's not really rare, especially with assists, and at times they have other drawbacks, Onion Knight for example does more brave damage on the other followups. Of course you're also spending your bravery instead of building it if you want to focus on that.
