I'm a sucker for horror game, but I'm not a huge horror movie buff, and the setup seemed extremely generic/obvious even for me.
the only reason I didn't drop the game was because of sam, ashley, and mike, and even then I still regret seeing it through.
I really can't say that about a lot of games, too.

But it begs the question, why did Arthas hold them back? And not to mention the game failed to convincingly show that the scourge were this unstoppable force that we were only fighting a restrained form of. We kicked their shit in all the way to their fucking base of operations and then proceeded to raid the shit out of it and kill every last one of them down to their leader. There was zero reason to believe the scourge was still this massive, overwhelming threat by then that the lich king was just holding back and without a lich king they would go wild.

And NOT TO MENTION, if the lich king is dead, why wouldn't the undead just regain their free will like the forsaken? No seriously, why?

The game couldn't really show the Scourge as an unstoppable juggernaut because MMO. In the RTS you could have a "got your shit pushed in" chapter. MMO story telling can't do that.

And only the strong willed Scourge would break free with the Lich Kings death, the rest would become mindless raging spookys.

But in a quest in the game, it's learned he destroyed his good side (represented as his child self and called Mattias Lenner). Also, when Jaina tried to reason with him in the 5 man dungeon, she found there was no good left in him, just a "monster". I remember this, they fucking flip-flopped hardcore on Arthas's own canonical state-of-being. The book contradicts further by saying that he destroyed Nerzhul's consciousness at the end, yet the lich king refers to himself as "having once been a shaman" in howling fjord questing. Blizz was seriously all over the fucking place with Arthas during wrath and was never able to fucking decide on what they wanted his character to be.
