Not really dead, but exiled. I'd say that, because the industry now focuses on trying to pull out the most graphically impressive "cinematic gaming experience" and platformers really doesn't work as well for that, the AAA developers don't really bother anymore.
Honestly I think this tendency is a terrible thing and, while I frequently criticise Nintendo for exploiting the same franchises for decades, I must admit that at least they're still trying to make games instead of movies that try to take advantage of the gaming market.
So, if you want platformers you'll have to go to either Nintendo or the indie scene.

Legends. Origins is probably harder but Legends is just more fun. The level design makes going through the levels really fluent and it feels so natural in my experience.
