Otherwise, you end up with cellphones, which appeal to the lowest of the lowest common denominator and employ extremely anti-consumer practices, but even THEY don't charge for online play.
If you only care about the bottom line, then consoles don't make any sense in a world where cellphones exist, are more widespread, are easier to develop for, and have a consumer-base with much lower standards that's much easier to exploit.
