Nonetheless it does add it, so I'd recommend you play them or look up the important characters and main plot (although the remaster is going to have something called "Terminal Discs" that pretty much explain the bare minimum you need from the first games)

In all honesty to get the most out of it you'll need prior knowledge of the series for certain terms, like the Epitaph of Twilight, Key of the Twilight, Aura, Kite, various side characters and locations like the Hulle Granz Cathedral.

It's story is self-contained enough that it's pretty good as a standalone but you'll miss out on some of the deeper stuff. I'd suggest atleast watching .Hack//Sign and reading the manga for IMOQ, and read the synopsis for .Hack//Roots. If you can, emulate the original 4 games too.

Normally I say that scaling enemies are godawful game design, but the Forest of Pain is the sort of place where "Enemy level 135 or your level +5 whichever is greater" would make perfect sense.
I'd also love to see traps in the battlefield, enemies that lie about their element and immunities, enemies that run away to heal up and come back, and basically every single "FUCK YOU PLAYER" trick in the book. It deserves to be a fucking ordeal.
