Guess it had more to do with both are platforming games and Miyamoto wanted something different. And since Rabbids are just weird things that you can put in anything they decided to use them to make an X-Com game.

Legends got ported to the Switch at least. I really don't think the rabbids are replacing Rayman. They've gone on different routes and I'm pretty sure the team working on Rabbids isn't the same that worked on Rayman Origins/Legends

It shouldn't be a Mario game at all, the Rabbids are just to make sure it's completely unpalatable.

I don't know why this wasn't a completely new game, I thought they learned their lesson about putting Mario in every single game with Splatoon. Fuck, just make it a Starfox spinoff game or something at least. If Federation Force had this gameplay instead I would have fucking loved it.
