With companies drawing the shortest path possible to people's wallets these days, will there ever be a game so far ahead of its time as Deus Ex?

I don't think so, and it makes me sad.
>>
How was Deus Ex ahead of its time exactly? It was great but it didn't really revolutionize anything.

I beat this game again earlier this year and it's so damn good. The atmosphere is 10/10.

>that eerie feeling of night that never ends
>those gusts of wind shaking trees
>that music
>that 90s cyberpunk feeling

I wish there was more media like this. I know there are plenty of cyberpunk stuff out there, but nothing like the og Deus Ex. The closest thing to DX experience was this movie called Strange Days.

So what's the official "high school canon" of video games?
What're the games that, if video games are ever an actual artform, every half-decent critic will have played?

I'm thinking Deus Ex, Mario 64, and Ocarina of Time for sure

The levels were much bigger and more open than most level design at the time, which were generally just a series of corridors that were quite linear. Far Cry 1 was revolutionary at the time for this same reason as well, even if it seems a bit quaint now.

A big focus on story and voice-acting. A lot of FPSes at the time were pretty mindless. Doom was good, but it didn't really require you to think too much. Many popular shooters at the time followed that general formula eg Blood, Duke Nukem, Quake, RotT, Shadow Warrior etc, even System Shock 2 had some really corridor-y level design.

There was also many ways to solve problems and the developers had the foresight if the player did certain things. For instance, you are generally supposed to kill Anna Navarre either in the subway or shortly after when you get captured, and Lebedev is either supposed to be killed by you or her. However, you can kill Navarre on Lebedev's jet and save him, and if you do, Lebedev has new dialogue that essentially spoils a lot of the late game twists. Even with fighting Navarre herself, you can either fight her conventionally or use her killphrase.

The way that different builds would experience the game in different ways was also a big factor. Levels would be easier or harder depending on build, and not only did this give the game more depth, it also added replayability.

These things seem almost standard (at least among good games) these days, but at the time were pretty much unheard of.

But that's what WRPGs have always been largely about, Deus Ex just did it in more detail. I think that Deus Ex was just one of the final games of that style of 90s western rpg development where the autismal amount of immersion and detail were the important thing in games. It died once PC exclusives started to die.

Deus Ex was not ahead of it's time. In fact it borrowed from most FPS and RPGs before it.

What it was was fucking AMBITIOUS. It's a miracle this game didn't fail, seeing as how many mechanics and branching paths there were. Not only that, but a story as red-pilled as Deus Ex will never be made again. The game pulled absolutely zero punches when it came to conspiracy theories and predicting the rise of globalism as a threat to humanity.

It's the greatest game of all time because no other game was as equally ambitious as it was successful in almost every aspect of it's design.

After finishing my annual DX playthrough I decided to check out Thief for the first time. It's alright, it's like a sneaky System Shock 2, but it's not good as Deus Ex or System Shock. The levels are really confusing and the map is fucking useless, but the stealth system is pretty impressive.
The controls are kinda "wobbly", just like in System Shock 2.

Is Thief 2 better? I still haven't finished the first game, I'm about 10 hours in, but I'm planning to finish it before trying out the other Thief games.

I actually kinda like the confusing levels, Thief is a game you can actually get lost in and it serves the atmosphere because you're adventuring in places where you're not supposed to be. You have to be constantly aware of your surroundings, even when 1000 zombies are chasing you. The vague map system supports this too.

It's pretty fucking badass augmentation, but fully upgraded it kinda breaks the game. If there's a aug charging station near you can just blast all the robots of the level in one sitting. You don't even need to bother collecting those precious EMP grenades anymore because they're fucking useless if you have the EMP drone.

Also, where does the EMP drone come from? I imagine JC is holding it between his butt cheeks.

If 2077 continues along the way of Witcher 3, I don't think that it will be similar to Deus Ex. The design of W3 was very modern and there were very little simulation like aspects to the game. Are you on dope? It was made in 2000.

All of its dialogue was spoken. Graphically, a lot of PCs couldn't handle its graphical needs.

As a shooter, it urged you to be sensible with how you use your ammo and avoid enemies if at all possible instead of ducking, weaving, dodging and blasting them as in other games, such as Unreal 1998.
>>
>>381203335

>>
>>381203661
>Graphically, a lot of PCs couldn't handle its graphical needs.

Yeah um that's not correct. The game uses the Unreal engine and Unreal in 1999 with levels just as large not only looked better but also ran better.

This comes from someone who played Unreal when it came out in 1999 with a very powerful computer and then used the same computer with Deus Ex but it struggled (particularly with load times in Deus Ex)

>>381203289
I hope that it will be good and I don't honestly expect CDPR to make a return to the 90s style, the company is just too big nowadays for that, but I hope that they refine the gameplay aspects from W3. The next big legitimate game changer and not just a meme like motion controls or VR is machine learning.

The A.I. revolution is what Warren Spector yearned for with the release of Deus Ex and it will be the next step on the industry's evolution.

The prequels' decisions to dial back this aspect of things (along with lesser game design) is really egregious - it hardly feels like Deus Ex at all. Worse yet they focus all their story aspect on human augmentation, I wish they could get better writers at least.

Strange Days is quite good until the weird social justice ending.

Well that's what happens if you hire SJW writers who want to carry a political message that you shouldn't be bad toward gays and transpeople.
>>
>>381200015

I played the 3 thief games in 2015 for the first time.

Desliked the first one.
Loved and was mind blown by the second
Enjoyed the third one even though it was a gigantic step back (kinda what Invisible War did to Deus Ex, but no that bad)
>>
>>381202747
They are trying to make a RPG, so the player character will probably be a mute person without personality. I hope to be wrong.
>>
>>381207670
If it were about gays and trannies that would at least be a little "edgy", but it seems more trite than that. Just regular, playing it safe "dont be racist" at least in MD.
>>
>>381200415
The endings are a bit lame.

Honestly, my experience was similar at first. Then I realized what the game wanted from me: Not play stealthily. Then I played all the way to Hong Kong or one level further before something else caught my attention. I didn't go back to the game after that.
>>
>>381209639
The analogy with trannies doesn't work since trannies don't have any superpowers that can kill you. You can't really "disarm" augmented people, that's the problem with them. They are hard to manage. Segregating them from the normal population makes sense.

Everytime I see this picture I squirm like a girl. This game has the potential to be so fucking good. And so fucking bad.

>will there ever be a game so far ahead of its time as Deus Ex?
Seeing how things are going in "machine learning" (aka "don't call it AI, you guys!"), the next "game so far ahead of its time as Deus Ex" will be an AI waifu that passes the Turing test most of the time.

I miss "hardcore" games in general, no arrows pointing to everything and things have to be figured out through the game without the UI holding your hand and telling you exactly what to do.

Yes, genuinely. It's one of the only things in the world where the sequel is just flat out better

I did half and half. Stealth until confronted with Paul's body in the morgue and then full murder rampage.
>>
>>381207172
"Deus Ex proper" is far too woke to fly with today's big-money publishers.
The early 00s were probably the last chance for games like that to be made on a budget that could realise them, before (((they))) realised there was a narrative outlet here that needed plugging and mainstreaming.
What a shame, as that one guy said.

Deus Ex was already part of that path though.
It's got less going on than Sentient, a PC/PSX game from 1997.

Really the only thing it does better is voices but we all know how focussing on voices instead of content works out.
>>

>>
>>381193532

MGS2.

It took years for people to actually accept meta games, and Bioshock just shoved dumb philosiphical snippets at you instead of turning everything from the gameplay to the scenario into a device for a meta narrative.

Bioshock was 2deep4u while MGS2 was actually balls-to-the-wall DEEP
>>
>>381212716
Exact symmetry is also perceptibly ugly.

>>381197682
Dude, Deus Ex came out in 2000. There were tons of story-driven games with voice-acted dialogue before that. Fucking Tomb Raider had 3 instalments before DX came out. (though they were linear, I'll give you that).
DX wasn't ahead of its time in level design and player agency either. That would mean that games improved in those aspects after DX came out, which isn't true at all: only a handful of games do it. The Thief series (which was before DX and largely made by the same people) comes to mind.
The point about different builds is moot; that's just taken from RPGs which go back decades. There was nothing new about this, even in video games.

>These things seem almost standard (at least among good games) these days
List 10 games from the last 10 years that do all of these things.

>predicted globalism destroying human civilization

The worst part is that the real dystopian future is worse than Deus Ex predicted, they forgot the part where the elite import the terrorists so they can justify taking away more freedoms.
>>
>>381215145
another shitty thing is the devs are actually hacks but had enough artistic freedom with the game
