I haven't played that many VNs honestly and have only read the old school stuff.

I'd recommend Clannad and Crescendo for romance/love stories. Higurashi is a classic story of murder and friendship. Grisaia for Katawa Shoujo, but with mentally disturbed girls.

Can't remember it's name anymore. It was short. Main character's name was Blackiris, the main girl was La.
