It's just another subseries within the larger Megami Tensei franchise which started with the original DDS:MT on Famicom, yeah. I don't really consider either SMT or Persona spinoffs tbqh, just different parts of the same franchise. SMT is closer to the original concept though, I guess.
I'm alright with people calling Megaten in general SMT but if they're going to do that, I wish they wouldn't insist Persona isn't SMT. Either all of Megaten is SMT or only SMT is SMT.

Is it just me or is Apoc easy as fuck? They throw so much Exp at you with hordes that getting overleveled even by accident is insanely easy, and if you know how to use Demon Whisper, getting to +9 quickly is a snap even without Compedium abuse.
The only thing that i have really been struggling with is War's insanely high costs on the Compedium.

Haven't played KMT yet but SMT1 ended up on me just buffing my MC and going auto battle on essentially every boss in the cathedral. Arch Angels, asura, same shit.

Not really. Nocturne feels a lot different, but mechanically it really isn't. Press Turn feels game changing and unique, but it boils down to doing the same thing you already did in earlier games. Same thing with 3D, it makes it feel more open but it really isn't, if anything it's a downgrade in the game design because third person feels like an afterthought. MGS3 is a completely different genre, but the way it distinguishes itself from earlier games is exactly the same as Nocturne, changing the tone and mood and slight changes to gameplay. I thought MGS3 handled it better, but that's just me.
