I have never played a single metroid game in my life. The 3D ones look boring as fuck, but from what I've seen the 2D ones look cool. Which of the 2D games is the best so I can just play that one?

Super Metroid and Zero Mission

Once you become a fan of the series you will probably love the Prime games and see why they're good. But for now play those two.

As with everything, you should play in release order. Especially since Metroid as a series has an absolutely bland and cliche plot so having the "story" in order is completely unnecessary.
