Mario's outfit makes him stand out more. The hat and overalls combo, the different colors, it works on multiple levels besides just lasting a long time. Sonic and Crash are just animals walking about, boring as hell. Okay OP, real quick rundown.
Mario's iconic design was mandated by it's medium's limitations at the time of it's creation.

Mickey Mouse and Felix the Cat were very iconic and easily identifiable in the 20s, their symplistic round designs and mostly solid black palette.

This almost-black color and simple designs was because of how hard was then to make cartoons, with every frame and layer meticulously hand-drawn in just grayscale.

Likewise, Mario was designed with the limitations of 8bit in mind. The mustache was because 8bit mouths pre-Mega Man looked awful. Hat to avoid drawing and animating hair. Overalls, long-sleeve shirt, white gloves and brown shoes to have a clear distinction of arms, legs, hands and feet. Much how the artists of the 20s did what they could so their creation would be workable and identifiable, Miyamoto and the original Donkey Kong programmers did with Mario/Jumpman so he could be identifiable RIGHT away.

but super mario 64 was a rad game. There was something "cool" about Mario. He traversed actually scary levels with ominous music and creepy faced boos instead of silly ones.
He picked up turtles and swung them around in epic battle arenas.
He could transform into Metal Mario and it had badass music.

Of course it had nintendo charm but mario was cooler to kids in the 90s, and games that were hits like mario kart 64 and smash helped.
