Hi, /v/. Thread about comp Overwatch. So, I just played 7 matches, but I only lost 1. I'm matching against plats, even diamonds. A lot of people asked me "Are you a smurf?" and I was surprised, as I thought Overwatch players were any good. At least I expected more, I guess. Okay, coming from Paladins and TF2 I acknowledge I may have an advantage over other newer players, but... platinum? Is competitive ranking like CS:GO once was, with new people above Master Guardian? I am so confused.
tl;dr: Is Overwatch competitive ranking system a joke?

The game has 2 different systems that make up your rank: your hidden MMR and competitive MMR. There's no way to check hidden MMR, but it's there and it dictates what kind of people you get in QP and Arcade, including 1v1 and 3v3. During the first placement matches it also plays the biggest role prioritizing getting you into good placements. I won like 7 or 8 placement matches initially and got into 45 during first season, which was about high silver, maybe low gold nowadays. For some people it's impossible to get above 50 no matter how many matches they win in placements, other get Masters during their first 5/5 placements.
Generally the system can distinguish between skilled players and smurfing players, so it prioritizes putting them in higher ranks.
